Inside Lizzo’s Weight Loss Journey: 2 Years, No Gimmicks, Real Results

Lizzo isn’t here for quick fixes or crash diets when it comes to weight loss. The Grammy-winning artist has been refreshingly real about her health evolution, what she calls her “weight release journey”, and in 2025, she revealed that she’d dropped 16% of her body fat. But make no mistake: this isn’t your typical Hollywood transformation story.

The whole thing started back in 2023 when Lizzo began prioritizing mental health over the scale. She shared on TikTok that her workouts weren’t about becoming thinner but feeling better. “I started working out for mental health, to have balanced endorphins… so I don’t look at myself and feel ashamed,” she said. Her body, she added, was bound to change naturally over time.

By January 2025, Lizzo proudly announced she’d reached her first weight release goal. Her stats? A 10.5 drop in BMI and a 16% reduction in body fat. She didn’t just celebrate the number, she celebrated her consistency. “Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my goal. I haven’t seen this number since 2014,” she wrote on Instagram.

Still, she avoids using the phrase “weight loss.” Instead, she prefers “weight release,” a term inspired by her boyfriend, Myke Wright. As she explained on Jay Shetty’s podcast: “It’s like I don’t think I want to lose anything. I think I want to win. I want to gain.”

When people speculated about weight-loss drugs, Lizzo had the perfect clapback. In a cheeky TikTok, she wore a costume dubbed “LizzOzempic” and captioned it: “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit.”

The reality? Lizzo was putting in the work: weight training, Pilates, jumping rope, long walks, and a clean diet. She told The New York Times that she’d been “methodical” about her health, and that change happened slowly but deliberately.

Her approach isn’t about perfection, it’s about movement and love. “There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates,” she said. Her workouts are flexible but consistent, and she keeps her focus on how she feels, not just how she looks.

In fact, Lizzo’s idea of body positivity has shifted to body neutrality. “I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day,” she admitted. But she also made it clear: that’s normal. What matters is continuing to show up for yourself.

With young fans looking up to her, Lizzo’s careful not to glorify the scale. “Even me releasing the weight has affected people, and I take that seriously,” she said. That’s why she talks about her journey with empathy and intention.

Her story is proof that weight loss doesn’t have to come with shame, and fitness doesn’t have to be about thinness. For Lizzo, it’s all about freedom, mental, physical, and emotional.
