Olivia Munn and John Mulaney are coming up on their first wedding anniversary, but things aren’t exactly smooth sailing right now.
The couple, who tied the knot less than a year ago, are finding it “a little tough” to spend quality time together because of how hectic their careers have become. Olivia, 44, told People that with both of them being constantly on the go, they’re basically relying on phone calls and quick chats in the car just to stay connected.
“We’ll steal little moments throughout the day to just talk,” she said. “Or, a lot of times, it’s in the car. When I’m driving somewhere, he’s driving somewhere; we just get on the phone and catch up like that.” It’s not ideal, but she says it works for now, even if it’s far from romantic. With Olivia filming season two of Your Friends and Neighbors and John, 42, busy with his Netflix show Everybody’s Live, their schedules are completely out of sync. “It’s a little tough right now,” she admits, “but I think from this moment forward, we stay together as a family.”
The couple shares two young kids, three-year-old Malcolm and seven-month-old Mei, and unsurprisingly, parenting has totally taken over their TV time. Olivia joked that the only thing they’ve managed to watch lately is Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. “John said the other day that he hasn’t watched anything adult besides my show, now that it’s airing, in we don’t know how long,” she shared. “It’s only Daniel Tiger at my house.”
Despite the chaos, Olivia is doing her best to carve out time for herself, especially when it comes to meditation. She admits she used to roll her eyes at people who swore by it but recently had a change of heart. “Someone said to me, ‘If you don’t have even 10 minutes a day for yourself, then God help you.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, yeah. I’ll make it 10 minutes.’ So I do that.”
Her schedule lately has been brutal. “I was in New York on Sunday, LA last night, took a red-eye back, and brought my kids to California yesterday. Then I came back to New York today,” she said. But walking into an empty house in New York, even for a moment, felt like a small reset. It’s clear that between parenting, working, and staying sane, Olivia and John are doing what they can to hold it all together, one phone call at a time.
