Will Jack Black be checking into The White Lotus Hotel for season 4? It looks like an amazing collaboration between the Minecraft star and Mike White could very well be in the works!
Jack Black and The White Lotus creator, Mike White, are no strangers. Both acted alongside each other in the epic Richard Linklater 2003 comedy, School of Rock. The film, written by Mike White, tells the classic tale of a deadbeat wannabe rocker who never makes it to the big stage, yet finds even more fulfillment teaching music as a class substitute. This quirky little movie came out over 20 years ago, yet fans across the globe have been praising the film to this day. But the biggest School of Rock fan out there is none other than Jack Black himself. While the funny-man has starred in just about everything throughout the years, from prestige films such as King Kong to silly comedies like Kung Fu Panda, he doesn’t hesitate to name School of Rock as his number one favorite film he’s ever done.
“That’s the one that’s nearest and dearest to my heart, because it was so much a part of me,” Black told Rolling Stone following the film’s 20 year anniversary. “It does mirror my experience with the entertainment industry. It felt like the planets aligned and I got to do the movie that I was born to do.”
He continued, saying, ”It didn’t really matter if I did anything else after that. There’s my tombstone. I can just chill and relax now, because I did it.”
And according to the actor, he is fully on board with the prospect of doing a School of Rock sequel. But only on one condition: if Mike White rejoins the follow-up film as a writer. But despite how eager the Minecraft star is to collaborate with White again on the film, he understands that he is busy with White Lotus. Not that Black’s complaining- in fact, he went so far as to call White Lotus “the best show on TV.”
High praise! But Black isn’t the only one with high praise for his former co-star. Recently, the White Lotus creator was asked by reporters if he’d consider teaming up with Jack Black again by having him star in the stellar ensemble cast of White Lotus season 4. This question caused White to light up, as he enthusiastically responded, “Yes! Absolutely!”
Meanwhile, when Black was asked why he hasn’t checked into The White Lotus Hotel yet, he said, “Hey, never say never! Maybe the next season!” He continued, gushing, “Listen. All I know is that when Mike White calls, I say ’how high.’”
But Black isn’t the only high profile celeb who’s desperate to check into The White Lotus hotel. According to Elite Daily, several major Hollywood players auditioned for a part in the prestige HBO drama, yet ultimately weren’t accepted for the role.
At the end of the day, when it comes to the hit series, it doesn’t matter how big of a name you are in the industry- so long as you can masterfully act the part. For the series’ creator, he’d much rather have an ensemble set of equals than an imbalanced dynamic where one person feels like “the star.” In the case of Cheers actor Woody Harelson, Elite Daily reports that he initially sought out a role on the show, yet backed down when he learned he wouldn’t be able to negotiate his salary. As mentioned, White respects the value of an ensemble cast, where the actors are paid the same amount. (The source claims he was considered for Walton Goggins’ role of Rick.)
Meanwhile, American Horror Story alum, Evan Peters, was the first choice pick to play Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Ethan, in season 2. The role ultimately went to Will Sharpe, who masterfully plays the cerebral husband that recently struck gold with his business.
Another notable celeb who ultimately didn’t get the part in her White Lotus audition was the “It’s Not Me, It’s You” crooner, Lily Allen. “I did do a self-tape for The White Lotus,” she revealed, according to The Independent. “I obviously did not get it. But I think I’m a bit scared of doing self-tapes,” she revealed.
