Jessie J Reveals Why She Ditched the Nanny Life for Full-Time Mom Mode

Jessie J is all in on the parenting front.

The singer, 37, born Jessica Cornish, recently opened up about why she decided that having a nanny just wasn’t for her. After welcoming her son Sky in May 2023 with partner and retired basketball star Chanan Safir Colman, Jessie quickly realized she wanted to take the reins on parenting, without outside help.

In a candid chat with People, Jessie J said, “We tried to have a nanny for six weeks, and it just wasn’t for us.” That six-week trial was enough for the couple to figure out that being hands-on was more their style, even if that means less sleep and more chaos.

Of course, they’re not entirely doing it solo. Jessie admits they’ll likely need help eventually, because, as she puts it, “We can’t physically do it on our own.” Thankfully, Jessie’s mom, Rose Cornish, is a huge part of their support system. Rose has stepped in to help with baby Sky, especially now that Jessie is balancing the demands of motherhood with her much-anticipated return to music.

And yes, the comeback is officially happening. Jessie’s gearing up to drop two new singles, “No Secrets” and “Living My Best Life,” marking her first major releases since her 2017 album R.O.S.E. But don’t expect her to keep baby Sky away from the action. Jessie revealed her little one often joins her in the studio. “I’m holding him while I’m recording it,” she said. “And he’s not a light boy, so I’m just trying to hold him, singing this really big song.”

It’s all part of the new normal she’s figuring out with Chanan. “It’s just been me and [Chanan] from day one. And we’re figuring it out,” she shared. The couple have become a solid parenting team, adjusting their schedules and routines to make it work. “One of us gets up in the morning. Sometimes I get up at 5:00, and I’ll batch-cook food for the next few days and put it in the freezer so that he’s got fresh food,” Jessie explained.

She’s not sugarcoating how intense it is, but there’s love and laughter in the mix too. “Me and Chanan have a good laugh every night about all the things that we’re doing,” she said. “We’re just holding each other’s hands and figuring it out as we go.”

Despite the sleepless nights and long days, it’s clear Jessie wouldn’t have it any other way. Her face lights up when talking about Sky. “He’s the best, man. He’s so smart. I love him so much,” she gushed.

Sky, now just over a year old, is already hitting some pretty major milestones. Jessie revealed he’s talking in full sentences, something not many kids his age are doing yet. “He started to talk in sentences, which is wild for his age, but he’s very advanced in his speech,” she said proudly. “He knows all of our names. So he goes, ‘Mummy’s Jess,’ and like, ‘Daddy Chanan.’”

With Jessie’s musical comeback on the horizon and her home life filled with toddler chatter, love, and teamwork, she’s clearly doing things her way. The nanny-free life might be hectic, but it’s hers, and it’s working.
