Jonathan Joss Murder Suspect Confessed on the Spot, Police Say

The shocking death of Jonathan Joss, best known for his role on Parks and Recreation, took a chilling turn after the suspect allegedly confessed to the shooting “immediately,” according to a police report obtained on June 3.

The report from the San Antonio Police Department paints a grim picture of the events leading to the 59-year-old actor’s tragic death on June 1. Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, 56, who lived nearby, was detained at the scene and reportedly told officers without hesitation, “I shot him.” The weapon used was identified as a rifle, confirming the violent nature of the crime.

The timeline laid out in the report shows the shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 1. Witnesses, including a woman who had driven Jonathan Joss and presumably his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, to check their mail, gave key details. The couple no longer lived at the property, their home having burned down after years of threats. This woman saw the suspect park directly behind their vehicle and witnessed an argument between Ceja and Joss through her rearview mirror. The suspect allegedly warned he had a gun and threatened to shoot before actually pulling the trigger.

Jonathan Joss was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m. by EMS on the scene, and Ceja was arrested and charged with first-degree murder soon after. The grief was immediate and personal for Gonzales, who took to Facebook the following day to share his heartbreaking account. He revealed that he and Joss had endured more than two years of persistent threats and harassment, much of it homophobic, which they had reported to law enforcement multiple times with no meaningful response. Gonzales described a deeply traumatic moment when they discovered their pet dog’s skull deliberately placed where they could see it, which caused them severe emotional distress.

According to Gonzales, while they were grieving and upset, a man approached them yelling violent homophobic slurs before raising a gun and firing. He emphasized that neither he nor Jonathan was armed or threatening anyone at the time. In a final heroic act, Jonathan pushed Gonzales out of harm’s way but was fatally shot himself. Gonzales’s statement ended with a powerful tribute: “He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving. I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.”

Despite the claims of homophobic motives from those close to the couple, the San Antonio Police Department issued a statement on June 3 saying their investigation has found no evidence connecting the murder to Jonathan Joss’s sexual orientation. They stressed that any credible evidence linking the crime to a hate crime would be taken very seriously and that charges would be updated accordingly if new information emerges.

The tragic killing of Jonathan Joss has left many in shock, especially given his popularity and the disturbing nature of the crime. With the suspect’s alleged immediate confession and witnesses corroborating the sequence of events, the case moves forward under intense public scrutiny. While authorities maintain they have not confirmed hate crime motives, the pain expressed by those closest to Joss reflects a wider conversation about violence and intolerance.

Jonathan Joss’s death is a somber reminder of the dangers that persist for many, even those who live openly and proudly. As the investigation continues, the hope remains for justice and clarity surrounding this heartbreaking loss.
