Michelle Obama is setting the record straight, despite swirling online chatter, she and Barack Obama are not getting divorced.
In fact, they’re just fine. On the Work in Progress with Sophia Bush podcast, Michelle took direct aim at the Barack Obama divorce rumors and explained why they’re not just wrong, they’re lazy assumptions.
She shared that some people couldn’t wrap their heads around her saying “no” or making independent decisions without jumping to conclusions about her marriage. That, she says, reflects more about society than about her personal life.
“They couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself… they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” Michelle said.
For Michelle, stepping into her 60s has meant taking control of her time, priorities, and how she wants to live, on her terms. And apparently, that’s been hard for some people to digest. The moment she doesn’t align with what others expect of a former First Lady, the narrative shifts to something dramatic.
“This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she asked rhetorically, calling out the double standards women often face. “But that’s what society does to us.”
Michelle emphasized that her evolution isn’t about pulling away from family or public life. She’s still giving speeches, working on major projects, and showing up in the world, just more intentionally.
The Obamas have been married for 32 years and have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. According to Michelle, their marriage is intact, and Barack is still a steady partner. What’s changing isn’t their relationship, it’s her mindset and priorities as she enters a new chapter.
Bottom line: Michelle’s not walking away from Barack. She’s walking into a more self-defined life. And that’s not a crisis, it’s growth.
