Orlando Bloom Says He’s Ready to Return as Legolas in New “Lord of the Rings” Movie

Orlando Bloom is ready to pick up the bow and arrow again, as Legolas.

The 48-year-old actor, best known to fantasy fans for playing the elven archer Legolas in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, has revealed he would gladly return to the role if the opportunity arose. Speaking during a panel at AwesomeCon, Bloom made it clear: if director Peter Jackson calls, he’s all in.

“I always think that if Pete says, ‘Jump,’ I say, ‘How high?'” Bloom said, reflecting on his deep connection to the character. “The idea of kind of going back is like… absolutely, who wouldn’t want to go back to that place?”

Legolas, an elf who doesn’t age, gave Bloom the rare chance to revisit the same role across two major trilogies over a decade apart. Yet despite the nostalgic pull, Bloom acknowledged the original “Lord of the Rings” films captured a kind of cinematic lightning in a bottle. “The magic of that moment is not something that could ever be repeated,” he said. “The time, the age, the place that we were at… is impossible to recreate.”

Still, Orlando Bloom praised the meditative nature of portraying Legolas: “Being in that headspace of Legolas is awesome. My ADHD is gone; I am focused… it’s this crazy, meditative state of being all-knowing and all-seeing, which is such a cool feeling.”

While Bloom sounds game, his co-star Sean Astin, who played the beloved Samwise Gamgee, seemed more hesitant. Astin shared that the immense emotional weight fans attach to the trilogy might complicate a return. “The idea of doing Sam again… Now, after 25 years of having people talk about what it meant and how it helped in their life… I wonder what that would be like to try and go into a performance,” he said.

One “Rings” veteran who is confirmed to return is Andy Serkis, who played Gollum. Not only will Serkis reprise the twisted creature in the upcoming spin-off film “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” he’ll also direct the project. Peter Jackson is on board as producer, and screenwriter Philippa Boyens has confirmed the film is set during the early days of the Fellowship timeline, just before Frodo leaves the Shire.

“It begins with Gandalf sending Aragorn on a quest to find Gollum,” Boyens revealed. This has sparked talk of another key return: Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. “I’ve spoken to Viggo, Andy has spoken to him, Peter has spoken to him… I cannot imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be completely and entirely up to Viggo.”

So far, there’s no confirmation on Bloom’s or Astin’s involvement in the Gollum film, but with Middle-earth expanding again, the door is clearly open.

With Serkis directing and Jackson producing, “The Hunt for Gollum” seems to mark a renewed era for Tolkien adaptations. And if Bloom gets the call to step back into Legolas’s boots, he’s already quiver-ready.
