Peaky Blinders is coming back on television officially, but with a new chapter this time centered on a new generation of the Shelby clan.
The popular BBC and Netflix series, whose sixth run finished up in 2022, was initially touted as “the end of an epic story.” Nevertheless, the showrunners assured the fans that the saga would go on but in a different way, and now creator Steven Knight has revealed what’s in store next.
The new extension will feature two new TV series that continue after World War Two. The narrative will now shift into 1953, when Birmingham was in the midst of large-scale reconstruction after the devastation of the Birmingham Blitz. As per the BBC, the new story will depict “the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project,” and it will become a vicious and high-risk competition with the Shelby family at its bloody center.
Knight clarified that the new seasons will still be based in Birmingham, with the city itself as the focal point of the series. He joked, “The new breed of Shelbys has taken over the reins and it’s going to be a hell of an ride.” This change heralds a passing of the baton, with the original family members who created the first six seasons making way for a younger, hungry crop of Shelbys to take a city that is full of unprecedented opportunities and threats.
And before this new television age kicks in, the fans will also receive the eagerly awaited Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man. The film takes place at the dawn of World War Two and will see Cillian Murphy reprise his legendary role as gang boss Tommy Shelby. Murphy, who will also be an executive producer on the new TV ventures, will be joined by Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan, award-winning actor Stephen Graham, and Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson.
Peaky Blinders initially aired in 2013 and tracked the growth of the Shelby clan from the post-World War One era to the violent 1920s and 1930s. The series received praises from all over the world, including a BAFTA Award for Best Drama in 2018, and gained a dedicated international fan base.
Although the BBC has not officially ruled out the return of familiar characters seen throughout the previous chapters, Murphy’s behind-the-scenes commitment keeps the new seasons heavily reliant on the original vision. Peaky Blinders’ continuation will be available on BBC in the UK and around the world on Netflix, guaranteeing the following Shelby era will be accessible to everyone.
With the series soon to enter the post-war 1950s and beyond, viewers can look forward to the same balance of family conflict, political machinations, and brutal struggles for power that made the original so unforgettable, only this time, seen through the eyes of a new Shelby generation bent on making their own mark in the history of Birmingham.
