Usher’s usual cheeky onstage antics nearly led to an actual emergency during his Past Present Future Tour stop at The O2 in London.
The R&B icon, known for feeding fans cherries during his sensual rendition of “There Goes My Baby,” almost served up a trip to the ER when he tried to feed cherries to a fan who was allergic, but he didn’t hear her say so at first. The awkward moment quickly turned into a scramble when the 46-year-old realized what he’d almost done.
According to the Daily Mail, the scene started off as Usher’s usual flirtatious performance bit. After spotting a super-fan in the crowd with an Usher tattoo, he leaned in and asked, “Would you be OK if I gave it a kiss?” before playfully planting one on her arm. Then he added, “You’re going to get me in trouble,” clearly loving the attention from the crowd. But the vibe took a wild turn when he offered her a cherry and she muttered in his ear, “I’m allergic.” The problem is, he didn’t hear her.
It wasn’t until a moment later that the gravity of the situation hit. “Oh s***, she is allergic to cherries. Anyone got an EpiPen?” Usher shouted, suddenly alarmed. He immediately hugged her and apologized, saying, “I’m sorry, I love you.” Trying to lighten the mood, he laughed, “We almost had an emergency in here.”
That could’ve gone sideways real fast, but thankfully, the fan didn’t eat the cherry, and everyone left in one piece. Still, it added a whole new layer to Usher’s signature cherry-feeding bit, which has already seen its fair share of drama.
Take, for instance, the viral fan interaction that sparked a bizarre rumor that a woman’s husband filed for divorce after her flirty moment with the star. That fan, Jimalita Tillman, has since cleared the air. Speaking to WGN News, she said, “That is completely false. I am single. I am a retired homeschool mom looking to expand the arts here and across the pond. I am single. You got a cherry, give me a jingle.” She added, “When he came around with those cherries, I said, ‘Well, life is a bowl of cherries; I’ll take one, maybe two.’” Clearly, she was all in on the fun, minus any marriage drama.
And if we’re talking about Usher concerts causing waves, you can’t forget the infamous Keke Palmer moment from 2023. That time, a video of Keke being serenaded by Usher went viral, and her then-partner Darius Jackson tried to shame her online, tweeting, “It’s the outfit tho… you a mom.” Fans weren’t having it, and he doubled down, saying, “This is my family, my representation. I have standards.”
Fast forward to now, and Keke is clapping back through her music. Her latest single, “My Confession,” from her upcoming album Just Keke, directly addresses the aftermath of that viral moment and her break-up with Darius. Keke wrote on Instagram, “This one is personal. ‘My Confession’ is exactly what it sounds like, me giving voice to the feelings I buried.”
In the song, she sets the record straight: “So I figured that I’d have myself a girls night / 48 later online / Made me a villain for sympathy, but you lied / But the truth is in Vegas we were already over, boo / Because of you.” She even throws more shade with, “72 hours later, now your feelings hurt / My fans were dragging you because you had the nerve.” The track samples Usher’s “Confessions, Part II” and gives a nod to “Burn,” tying the whole drama back to where it started.
So, Usher’s cherry routine continues to leave a mark, sometimes romantic, sometimes awkward, and sometimes dangerously close to medical mayhem. But one thing’s for sure, he knows how to keep his shows memorable, for better or worse.
