Marvel just released the first trailer for Thunderbolts, and suffice it to say-it is not exactly your average superhero team-up.
Gone are the golden-era Avengers, and in their stead, we have a crew of misfits, assassins, and morally ambiguous anti-heroes trying to fill the void.
The Plot – What We Know So Far
Slated for a May 2, 2025, release date, Thunderbolts assembles a few of the MCU’s most volatile characters. Headed by John Walker, U.S. Agent, the team also consists of familiar faces like Yelena Belova, Alexei (Red Guardian), Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier, and a couple of others with questionable loyalties.
The twist? The Avengers are no more, and the world needs a new breed of “heroes” to take their place. But these aren’t the poster boys and girls of righteousness. The trailer teases plenty of internal conflict, backstabbing, and a looming external threat that forces them to work together-whether they like it or not.
The Big Bad: Meet Sentry and The Void
The trailer’s biggest reveal, and one that’s already set the internet abuzz, is Sentry as the main antagonist. For those unfamiliar, Sentry is often compared to Marvel’s Superman-but with one terrifying twist: He’s super-powerful and nearly invincible but comes with a darker alter ego in the form of The Void. It’s hinted that The Void will definitely have a major part to play, meaning things are about to get messy.
The action seems brutal.
Unlike so many other Marvel movies, which boast gleaming, CGI-heavy set pieces of action, Thunderbolts appears to lean into a grittier, more real-world approach to combat. Bucky and Yelena’s fight scenes look like they’re ripped straight from some kind of high-octane spy thriller, while Red Guardian’s strength is put to the test in ways we haven’t seen yet.
The Score – Son Lux Brings the Heat
But one of the biggest surprises? Son Lux-the geniuses behind Everything Everywhere All At Once-is handling the score. Expect eerie, tension-packed music that elevates the dark and unpredictable tone of the movie.
Fan Reactions – Exhilaration or Skepticism?
The internet, as expected, is divided. Some fans are utterly delighted to see the MCU double down on gray moral storytelling, while others worry this might end up feeling like “Discount Suicide Squad.” Given Marvel’s hit-or-miss streak of late, cautious optimism abounds regarding Thunderbolts.
Will Thunderbolts be that breath of fresh air the MCU needs, or is this another gamble which may or may not pay off? We will have to wait and find out when the movie hits theaters on May 2nd, 2025.
For now, this Thunderbolts trailer has given us plenty to dissect, and if there’s one thing for certain, it’s that this is no ordinary Marvel team-up. Caught any hidden details in the trailer? Drop your theories in the comments!
