Universal has revealed the ultimate trailer for Wicked: For Good, the much-awaited sequel to the record-breaking 2024 adaptation of the Broadway hit.
The film, which is the second and final installment of the two-film adaptation, will open in theaters on November 21.
The new trailer provides fans with their first-ever look at some of Oz’s most recognizable characters, such as Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Although brief, their appearances are a clear indication of the complete blending of the Wicked narrative with the classic story of The Wizard of Oz.
As per the official synopsis, the sequel takes place in the Land of Oz prior to and subsequent to Dorothy Gale’s ill-fated arrival from Kansas. It will center on the action of the second act of the musical, emphasizing the development of the friendship between Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland. As Elphaba comes to accept her fate as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda becomes the Good Witch of the North, their decisions will change the course of Oz’s future.
Cynthia Erivo returns to play Elphaba, with Ariana Grande as Glinda. The returning starry cast also features Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, and Bronwyn James as ShenShen. Jon M. Chu directs again, with a script by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.
The initial Wicked film was a box office sensation, earning $756 million globally and establishing itself as the biggest Broadway-to-movie adaptation of all time. It also became an awards-season favorite, earning 10 Academy Award nominations, among them best picture, lead actress for Cynthia Erivo, and supporting actress for Ariana Grande. The movie eventually took home the award in costume design and production design, with Paul Tazewell being the first Black man to win an Oscar for costume design.
With Wicked: For Good, Universal is trying to bring the saga full circle with an emotional and visually stunning conclusion. The trailer hints that viewers can look forward to stunning visuals, commanding performances, and a richer exploration of the characters audiences have grown to adore on stage and screen for decades.
With November approaching, the buzz for Wicked: For Good keeps building, paving the way for another possible box office hit and awards contender.
