William Shatner is showing once again that he is living up to his legendary “Star Trek” catchphrase to live long and prosper.
Fans of the great actor were having a collective heart attack this week after news broke that the 94-year-old star was rushed to hospital after suffering what was described as “a medical emergency.
The alarm was raised when TMZ broke the news on Wednesday that Shatner had been hit with a sudden medical condition at his Los Angeles residence. His agent Harry Gold described, according to the outlet, how the actor had had some trouble with his blood sugar later in the afternoon and was immediately checked out. With Shatner’s age and decades-long fame, the news spread fast, alarming fans and the entertainment community.
But the actor himself did not waste any time in clearing the air. Logging into his verified Instagram handle on Thursday, Shatner ensured his fans that everything was fine. “I over indulged,” he confessed in an honest post, joking about the situation. He included a thank you note to the people concerned, penning, “I thank you all for caring but I’m perfectly fine.” He also snuck in a little of his characteristic wit by donning a winking face emoji as he reminded everyone, “I keep telling you all: don’t trust tabloids or AI,” with a wink.
In a subsequent post, Shatner went even further with the humor, riffing on the classic Mark Twain line, “Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.” In a photo of himself dressed as Twain, Shatner mocked the sensationalism surrounding the report, proving not only that he was healthy but also still quick and funny. Twain had previously famously uttered that line in 1897 when a paper inaccurately reported his death, and Shatner’s use of it struck just the right chord of reassurance and humor.
The incident was a reminder of the vulnerability yet strength of aging icons such as Shatner. Though understandably shaken by the news, the actor’s immediate reaction emphasized the need not to jump to conclusions when celebrity illness stories make headlines. His warning also came in the form of advice, don’t always believe everything you read, particularly in tabloids or rumor columns.
At 94, William Shatner remains defying the odds, with his health as well as his keen sense of humor intact. If anything, this close call made everyone realize just how much the fans still fondly care for the man who popularized Captain Kirk. And going by Shatner’s own testimony, he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.
