A nationwide recall has been issued for over 2 million cases of grocery-sold donuts and pastries due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can be fatal to vulnerable populations.
Update – Statement from Simona Ionita, Vice President of Supply Chain and Recall Coordinator
At FGF, food safety is our top priority. We want to clarify recent media coverage regarding FGF’s voluntary recall of donuts to ensure customers have not been misled or confused:
- The voluntary recall was completed over a month ago (early January), and does not implicate anything that is currently, or was recently on the market.
- All donuts are completely safe to eat.
- The voluntary recall was a precautionary measure based on non product related findings at one of our donut facilities in the US.
- No donuts or food contact surfaces ever tested positive for listeria.
- The voluntary recall applied only to donut products in the U.S.
We take food safety seriously and acted with an abundance of caution.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall, initiated by FGF Brands on January 7, 2025, impacts 60 different donut products, including 15 Dunkin’ varieties such as Munchkins, apple fritters, French crullers, paczki pastries, cake rings, and cinnamon sticks. The recall covers all products manufactured on or before December 13, 2024.
Why Is This Dangerous?
The presence of Listeria monocytogenes poses serious health risks, particularly for young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting. Pregnant individuals are at an even greater risk, as exposure can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infections for newborns.
What Should Consumers Do?
- Check your pantry and dispose of any affected products.
- Do not consume recalled donuts and pastries.
- Return recalled products to the store for a refund.
- If symptoms of listeria infection develop, seek medical attention immediately.
Company and FDA Response
FGF Brands has issued an official statement apologizing for the incident and assuring consumers that they are working closely with the FDA to prevent further contamination. The FDA classified this as a Class II recall, meaning exposure to the contaminated product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.
How to Stay Safe
Consumers are advised to visit the official FDA website for the full list of affected products. If you suspect a product you own is contaminated, do not consume it and report any concerns to the FDA’s consumer complaint line.
