Doechii’s Ctrl-Alt-Delete: How SZA Helped Her Dump a Toxic Ex and Drop a Hit

Doechii, inspired by SZA, is the energy we’re living for. The “Anxiety” hitmaker just got real about how the Ctrl album changed her life, not just musically, but personally too. In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Doechii opened up about how SZA’s vulnerability on her debut record gave her the guts to walk away from a toxic relationship that was killing her creative vibe.

She shared that when she was 18, she was dating a guy who didn’t support her music. He thought it “wasn’t cool,” and his negativity led her to stop writing completely. “I took his opinion way too seriously,” she said. “When really, he just didn’t get it.” But everything shifted the first time she heard Ctrl. “It literally gave me the courage to break up with him,” Doechii admitted. The album helped her understand that being vulnerable in her music was a strength, not a flaw.

And guess what? That breakup fueled one of her biggest early wins. Doechii revealed that her viral 2021 track “Girls” was all about that ex. “I had been working on it for a year, and I played it for him, and he was like, ‘This sucks. What are you even talking about?’” That was the final push she needed. “And the girls loved it because they felt me,” she added. Classic ex-boyfriend L.

Doechii’s learned her lesson since then. Now, if someone ends up in her lyrics in a bad way, they don’t even get the satisfaction of reacting. “If I’m writing about you in the negative, you can’t reach out, you’re blocked,” she said. Cold? Maybe. Deserved? Absolutely.

So yeah, the Doechii-inspired-by-SZA moment gave us not just empowerment but a banger too. And now we’re wondering, what’s the one album that changed your life?
