House maestro Dombresky channels the sexy, soulful sounds of R&B on “In My Room,” featuring lauded singer-songwriter SHELLS, serving as his latest single on Insomniac Records.
Equal parts delicate and dizzying, “In My Room” enlists the effortless vocal prowess of UK-based sensation SHELLS, who has left her stamp on tracks for heavyweight talents from the likes of Vintage Culture, Friction, Kideko, Wilkinson, Bondax and more. On her new delivery for Dombresky, she toys around with the thought of being haunted by the memory of a former lover. Her melancholic lyrics are juxtaposed brilliantly by a silky groove, delicate string pads, shuffling drums, light breakbeat builds, and pitch-shifting vocal chops that harmonize with the main motif.
Dombresky confirms the R&B influences of “In My Room” are both overt and intentional: “I purposefully sought out to do something different with this record. I’m a massive R&B fan, and I wanted to create something that was authentic to my musical tastes. I wanted to create something soulful and sexy, while keeping it something that you can play in the club. ‘In My Room’ is a blend of those two worlds.”
“In My Room” was born from a listening session that saw Dombresky digging into some of his favorite R&B records. Once his musical ideas were formed, he reached out to SHELLS for vocal inspiration.
“I produced a section and then sent it off to SHELLS, and she immediately had an idea. What she came back with was totally in line with this sort of R&B style that I was going for. We both wanted to weave that kind of soulful sexiness into a traditional house record. She nailed it.”
Cutting his teeth in his homeland for nearly 20 years, the French phenom, otherwise known as Quentin Dombres, launched his Dombresky alias in 2015. He’s since become a regular fixture on the Insomniac Records catalog, after massive singles such as “Simple Hit,” “Futurmastic,” and his most recent ‘Jack Machine’ alongside label regular Noizu. “In My Room” sees Dombresky returning for a strong start to the year, keeping the grooves rolling following a slew of stompers in 2022 that included “El Beso”, “Bubblin,’” and “Save Our Souls.”
A connoisseur of the kind of quirky, powerful, and fun house cuts that create magic in the club, it’s not a surprise that he’s recently sold-out appearances at Club Space Miami, Blackbox Theatre Charlotte, and Webster Hall NYC, as well as his recent co-headline show with Noizu in Los Angeles.
