Amidst a flood of praise surrounding the lead single ‘Come Together’, Yorkshire artist Franky Wah now delivers his highly anticipated mixtape The Revival Vol. 1, out today.
A 14-track release that has been two years in the making, The Revival Vol. 1 is a deeply personal and incredibly diverse body of work, made up exclusively of Franky’s own productions. It features recent singles ‘You’re Not Alone’, an edit of the 90s dance classic of the same name, and the euphoric ‘Come Together’, which has just been added to the BBC Radio 1 Playlist, after being crowned ‘Hottest Record In The World’ by BBC Radio 1 tastemaker Annie Mac, as well as MistaJam’s ‘Self Certified’. As well as these anthemic hits, the project also features underground cuts such as ‘Lost In Time’ and ‘Tomorrow’, highlighting the broad range of his musical abilities. Topped off with remixes of dance music legends Moby and MJ Cole, Franky insists that it’s the emotion of the tracks that bands the mixtape together.
“I think the idea was basically there ever since I set out producing and releasing music, but it’s been a solid plan in the making for the last two years,” he explains. “I know things have changed dramatically over the past few years in how music is released, and it’s become even more disposable than ever, but I really wanted to put out a body of work to showcase my sound. I think it tells the story of my music more cohesively as a journey through 14 tracks than each song being released one at a time.”
The release follows his captivating set for BBC Radio 1’s Virtual Big Weekend over the bank holiday, as well as consistent radio support across the lead single ‘Come Together’ which has been praised by the likes of R1 DJ Nick Grimshaw and tastemakers Danny Toward and Pete Tong, in addition to Kiss FM and Kiss Fresh.
It also comes off the back of his life-time dream to release on Tale Of Us’ Afterlife label, with the single ‘Aftertime’, again showcasing that Franky Wah has the rare talent to straddle all lanes within the dance sphere.
Franky’s frantic start to the year followed a career-defining 2019 which saw him release a slew of lauded singles, including ‘Time After Time’ featuring the inimitable Jessie Ware, which reached Beatport’s Top 10 as well as Top 5 of Radio 1’s Dance Chart. Arguably the most successful release last year was ‘Hide’, featuring New Zealand singer-songwriter Robinson, which became BBC Introducing ‘Track Of The Week’ on Radio 1 and has so far amassed 1.4 million combined streams.
