KUURO and Saint Punk return to Monstercat today with their high-energy phonk-influenced bass house debut collaboration, “Tokyo Drift.”
Inspired by the adrenaline-pumping spirit of The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, KUURO and Saint Punk craft a foundation steeped in high-octane, racing-inspired vibes. With their musical prowess, they launch the track into an exhilarating listening ride, blending electrifying and thrilling melodies mirroring the heart-racing sequences and neon-lit streets from the film. The essence of Tokyo Drift comes alive with vocals from the original Teriyaki Boyz release and the duo’s own distinctive soundscapes, buckling listeners in a world where music and motion collide.

KUURO shares, “I have known and loved Saint Punk’s work for years but never had the chance to work with him, even though we live less than a mile apart. The real catalyst for our meeting was actually community driven through suggestions from the GTA Online community. Trevor (Saint Punk) ended up sending me a couple of rough WIPs, and the blaring drop synth in the demo that ended up becoming “Tokyo Drift” immediately caught my attention. A gaming friend of mine had recently introduced me to the “Phonk” genre, so I went in and added some distorted cowbell sounds and started to play around with melodies. It ended up being entirely coincidental that Rocket League was looking for a record with the Tokyo Drift theme, so I’m extremely grateful that things ended up aligning the way they did for this!”
Saint Punk adds, “Bringing this song to life has been quite a journey spanning nearly two years. Luke and I initially toyed with the idea of incorporating a Tokyo Drift sample – something that seemed a little too ambitious at the time. We thought why not just give it a try and see what happens, and I’m glad we did. Juggling sample clearance and maneuvering through release date shifts felt like a wild ride, but it was worth it in the end! I’m immensely grateful for the Monstercat team, and Rocket League’s collaboration, which has played a big part in finally sharing this with everyone.”
