Matt Lucas’ Voice Gives Out in Middle of Les Mis

Matt Lucas had to make an unexpected exit from the stage during a live performance of Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular in Australia after experiencing sudden health issues.

The 51-year-old British comedian and actor, best known for his roles in Little Britain and The Great British Bake Off, had been playing the fan-favorite character Monsieur Thénardier. But during a recent show, things took a turn when his voice gave out mid-performance.

Lucas shared the experience with fans on Instagram, admitting it was a first for him. “In over 30 years, I’ve never had to bow out during a performance,” he wrote. He explained that while performing the iconic number Master of the House, he felt his voice completely desert him. That’s when understudy Connor Jones had to step in and take over the role for Act 2.

“If Thenardier looked very different in Act 2, that was because the amazing Connor Jones took over,” Lucas added, expressing gratitude for his co-star. “I’m now in bed resting up and hope to be back on stage soon.”

Lucas has been performing in the Australian leg of the Les Mis arena tour, which launched in Sydney and is now playing in Melbourne through May 25. The production celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original London stage version and includes a limited five-week run before heading to Brisbane for five final shows.

Despite the mid-show health scare, fans have flooded social media with well-wishes and praised Lucas for his honesty and professionalism. His role as Thénardier has been widely appreciated for its humor and charisma, a perfect fit for Lucas’ theatrical style.

Outside of the musical, Matt has also been making headlines for a different reason. He recently issued a public apology to actress Millie Bobby Brown after a post referencing his old Little Britain character Vicky Pollard was taken the wrong way. Lucas had shared an image of Millie with the caption “no but yeah but,” one of Pollard’s catchphrases.

The post sparked backlash, with critics accusing him of mocking the young actress’ appearance. Millie herself had spoken out about the pressure and criticism she faces online, prompting Lucas to clarify his intent.

In his apology, Matt explained that the reference was meant to highlight the visual similarity between Millie’s outfit and Vicky Pollard’s iconic pink top and blonde hair. “I thought you looked terrific, and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you,” he wrote, insisting he meant no harm. “I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you, but I realize it has, and for that, I apologize.”

Between his sudden stage exit and the social media controversy, it’s been a rough week for Lucas. But fans are hopeful that he’ll bounce back quickly, both onstage and off. With just a few weeks left of the Les Misérables tour in Australia, the pressure is on, but if anyone can handle it with humor and grace, it’s Matt Lucas.
