Megan Moroney isn’t holding anything back.
The 27-year-old country singer says her songwriting is “painfully honest,” and that vulnerability has become her superpower. Since releasing her debut album Lucky in 2023, Moroney has been on a fast track to stardom. Her deeply personal lyrics have resonated with a fan base that’s growing fast, and it’s not hard to see why.
“There’s definitely strength in being painfully honest, even if it’s hard to talk about whatever it is,” Moroney told People. “And I feel like I’ve got a fan base of younger girls that really look up to me. So if I can be the one that tells them it’s going to be okay, or I once felt this way and now I don’t, I think it’s brave, and I don’t feel weaker for it.”
Megan Moroney’s songwriting is rooted in her real-life experiences. That hasn’t changed as she works on her next album. In fact, she’s almost done writing it. “I mean, I would say that my next album is probably like 80 percent written,” she said. “I just try to live my life and write about it. So that’s kind of how this next album is shaping up, too.”
Though her writing style hasn’t shifted, fans can expect something a little different this time around. Moroney says the new album is more upbeat. “I would say I’ve still got the emo cowgirl staples on there because it wouldn’t be a Megan Moroney album without some heart-wrenching thing,” she said. “But I do think it’s lighter and it’s really fun. I’ve got so many songs on my phone right now that I’m just like… I know my fans are just going to freak out.”
While she’s building her own lane in country music, Moroney doesn’t shy away from sharing her influences. She’s long admired Kacey Musgraves, both for her sound and for her lyrical depth. “Anything with Kacey next to it freaks me out,” she said in an interview with NME. “Because she’s the reason I wanted to write songs. She’s such a smart writer and I fell in love with it.”
Moroney’s blend of heartfelt lyrics and modern country flair continues to set her apart. Whether she’s leaning into heartbreak or writing something more carefree, her honest approach makes each song feel personal, and that connection keeps fans coming back.
With her next project nearly wrapped and a loyal fanbase eagerly waiting, Megan Moroney is proving that authenticity in songwriting still matters, and that being “painfully honest” might just be the secret sauce to lasting success.
