Moby Doesn’t Care What AI Does to Music

Moby, the iconic dance music producer, has a unique stance on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in the music industry.

While many artists, like Ed Sheeran and Paul McCartney, have publicly expressed concern about AI taking over songwriting, performance, and even replicating voices, Moby is pretty chill about it. He admits that he doesn’t really worry about AI’s impact on music and is content to let things unfold as they will.

In an interview with Sky News, Moby shared his thoughts on the topic. “I completely appreciate and respect the concerns that other people have. I think they’re incredibly valid… but for me personally, I don’t know. Maybe it’s naive and stupid of me, but I kind of just ignore it.” This laid-back approach to AI is something you don’t hear often in the music industry, where there’s a lot of nervous energy around the idea that AI might take over some creative aspects of the job.

Moby’s attitude seems to come from a place of trust in the natural evolution of music. He’s not afraid of AI remixing or reinterpreting his work. “Part of remix culture is seeing how people reinterpret your work,” Moby explained. “Sometimes it’s mediocre, sometimes it is bad, but sometimes it is so inspired, and I can actually learn a lot from other creative processes.” For him, it’s all part of an ongoing creative dialogue that’s been a core part of the music world for decades.

While Moby remains unphased, others in the industry are more uneasy about AI’s potential impact. Caleb Followill, frontman for Kings of Leon, shared his concerns, admitting he’s “kind of scared” of the rise of AI in music. “I’ve seen some stuff that makes me a little nervous,” he said.

Despite the mixed reactions, Moby is sticking to his guns. He’ll continue to release his music, and if AI wants to do its thing, he’s all for it. It’s clear that Moby sees AI not as a threat but as another avenue for creativity. Whether or not the rest of the industry follows suit remains to be seen.
