Goodwill Shoppers Can Claim Up to $5,500 After Data Breach Settlement

Thousands of Goodwill shoppers could be eligible for one-time settlement due to data breach of up to $5,500 – but only if they act fast and have the right documentation.

The payouts stem from a class action settlement following a March 2023 data breach at MERS Missouri Goodwill Industries, a nonprofit that operates under the broader Goodwill Industries International network. The breach allegedly compromised sensitive consumer information, including Social Security numbers and personal details.

Although MERS Missouri Goodwill has denied any wrongdoing, it agreed to settle the lawsuit to avoid further litigation costs.

Who’s Eligible?

If you received a notice about the breach last year, you’re likely part of the class action. That means you may be entitled to financial compensation – especially if you can show proof of monetary losses or time spent dealing with the fallout.

Here’s what’s on the table:

  • Up to $500 for ordinary losses – This includes out-of-pocket costs related to identity theft, fraud, credit monitoring, and other expenses.
  • $100 for lost time – You can claim $25 per hour for up to four hours spent addressing the issue.
  • Up to $5,000 for extraordinary losses – If you suffered significant unreimbursed financial harm due to the breach, you may be entitled to this higher tier (with receipts).
  • $50 flat payment option – Don’t want to document your losses? You can opt for a simple $50 alternative cash payout instead.
  • Free credit monitoring – All eligible claimants can receive two years of identity theft protection services.

What You Need to Do

To receive compensation, submit your claim before July 7, 2025. Claims can be submitted online or by mail through the official settlement website.

If you wish to opt out or object to the settlement, the deadline is June 6, 2025.

The final court hearing to approve the settlement will take place on July 10, 2025.

Why It Matters

This case serves as a reminder that consumer data protection isn’t just a corporate concern – it has real-world impacts. If you shopped at a MERS Goodwill location in Missouri or Illinois around March 2023 and received a data breach notification, check your eligibility and consider filing a claim for a part of the settlement.

With payouts reaching up to $5,500, it’s worth taking the time to act before the deadline.
