R. Kelly has reportedly overdosed in prison just days after being thrown into solitary confinement, an incident that his lawyers say was triggered by dangerously high doses of medication.
The disgraced singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence in North Carolina after being convicted on serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges. But now, his team is claiming his health and safety are in grave danger, following a sudden collapse that led to a hospital emergency.
According to court documents, the 58-year-old R&B artist was put into solitary on June 10 and handed anxiety medication by staff at the Federal Correctional Institution. A few days later, he reportedly began feeling faint and dizzy and noticed black spots in his vision before he passed out. He was rushed to Duke University Hospital, and during the ride, Kelly claims he overheard a prison officer mutter, “This is going to open a whole new can of worms.” That’s exactly what seems to be happening now.
Kelly’s attorney, Beau B. Brindley, filed a motion describing the overdose as a direct result of being given dangerously high amounts of medication. At the hospital, doctors found blood clots in Kelly’s legs and lungs and planned to keep him for surgery. But instead of letting that happen, prison officials allegedly pulled him out of the hospital early and returned him straight back to solitary, despite his condition.
And things only get darker from there. Just days before the overdose, Kelly’s team had filed an emergency motion claiming he was the target of a murder-for-hire plot involving prison officials and another inmate. The motion describes a chilling phone call from a Bureau of Prisons official warning Kelly to avoid the mess hall due to poisoned food threats. It also includes a sworn statement from terminally ill inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, an alleged Aryan Brotherhood leader, who claims officials offered him freedom if he killed Kelly.
According to the affidavit, Stine says the deal included being transferred to another facility post-murder, where he could then escape and disappear. He allegedly made it as far as Kelly’s housing unit in March before backing out and ultimately exposing the plot. It’s a wild accusation, but one that Kelly’s team says proves his life is in danger inside.
Despite the growing concerns, federal prosecutors aren’t buying it. Assistant US Attorney Jason Julien came out swinging, slamming Kelly’s claims and reminding the court that the Supreme Court had already denied the singer’s appeal. Julien called Kelly a “prolific child molester” and argued that he’s never shown remorse. The prosecutor also pointed out that Kelly recently participated in a social media challenge by dropping a new prison song where he claimed he “didn’t deserve” to be incarcerated.
Now, with Kelly’s health deteriorating, his legal team insists he should be released immediately. The judge, Martha Pacold, is expected to review the motion on Friday, and given everything unfolding, it could be one of the most tense hearings in Kelly’s long, twisted legal saga.
For a man already convicted of exploiting minors and leading a decades-long abuse operation, the headlines just keep getting darker. Whether or not Kelly is truly being targeted or manipulating the system remains a heated debate, but one thing is clear: this latest overdose has brought a fresh wave of controversy around the star’s prison life, and it’s far from over.
