Trader Joe’s just did something no one saw coming, they opened a second store directly across the street from their long-standing Sherman Oaks location.
Yep, two full-sized Trader Joe’s stores are now operating side-by-side in Los Angeles, and the internet has questions.
The new spot, which quietly opened on June 6, has already been nicknamed “Sherman Oaks too” by the crew. The company says both stores will remain open for now, and they even operate on the exact same hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily.
People online are totally baffled. Shauna Green, a local shopper, posted a TikTok showing both locations in frame. “Want to know something actually insane?” she asks, pointing at both stores. The video racked up over 65,000 views and 2,000 likes in just days. She even said a worker confirmed that the older store recently renewed its lease, so it’s not going anywhere.
When asked why Trader Joe’s would pull such a move, company reps said the foot traffic justified it, and locals had been complaining about overcrowded aisles and tough parking for years. So instead of shutting one down, the brand decided to test running both.
Matt Judd, team lead at “Sherman Oaks too,” told local news the original plan was to replace the 1973 location. “Somewhere along the line, we decided maybe we could see how two goes for a little bit,” he explained. VP of Marketing Tara Miller also confirmed it’s all about improving the customer experience, not just profits.
And apparently, the new store comes with perks: wider aisles, better refrigeration, more frozen food space, and a full-on parking garage. Fans are already calling it a major upgrade.
For reference, here’s a breakdown of the Trader Joe’s footprint:
Trader Joe’s Store Stats
State | # of Stores | Density |
---|---|---|
California | 205 | 1 store per ~193,000 people |
New York | 35 | |
Washington | 29 | |
Florida | 27 | |
Texas (less dense) | 20+ | 1 store per ~1.3 million residents |
Total (U.S.) | 608 | Across 44 states and territories |
Locals and fans across the country are comparing this bold move to Starbucks, you know, the one that puts multiple locations on the same block in busy areas. Some call it the beginning of “chainification,” but others are just relieved they might not have to fight for a parking spot anymore.
So, while some shoppers are scratching their heads at the double Trader Joe’s setup, others are living for the extra breathing room, easy parking, and faster lines. One thing’s clear: if your usual TJ’s is packed, you might want to peek across the street.
