What Went Wrong with CosMc’s? Why McDonald’s Is Closing All Locations

If you’ve been meaning to try one of CosMc’s colorful drinks or grab a quick bite at one of McDonald’s futuristic café-style spinoff locations, now’s your last chance as those locations are closing.

McDonald’s has officially announced it’s shutting down all CosMc’s restaurants, just under two years after launching the pilot concept. The closures will happen on a rolling basis, and the CosMc’s app, loyalty program, and web ordering will all shut down on June 23, 2025.

CosMc’s was McDonald’s big swing at entering the booming specialty beverage market. Think bubble tea, iced lattes, energy drinks, and add-ons like popping boba and flavor shots, all served in a sleek, drive-thru-only setup. It was a clear nod to Gen Z coffee culture and a way to test bold new flavors without interrupting the main McDonald’s menu.

Here’s what’s closing:

  • Bolingbrook, Illinois (the flagship location)
  • Fort Worth, Texas
  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Allen, Texas
  • A second location in the Dallas-Fort Worth area

These five locations were the only CosMc’s stores ever opened to the public.

The brand confirmed that any unused rewards points from the CosMc’s Club loyalty program will expire on June 23, so if you’ve racked up freebies, use them now. After that date, they’re gone for good.

Why McDonald’s is Closing CosMc’s Locations

McDonald’s says CosMc’s was always a limited-time test, one that allowed them to explore bold drink flavors and test new restaurant technology. While CosMc’s won’t continue as a standalone chain, the company plans to take what it learned and test some of the most popular beverages in select U.S. McDonald’s locations soon.

In a statement, McDonald’s said the test run allowed them to try out “new, bold flavors and different technologies and processes, without impacting the existing McDonald’s experience for customers and crew.”

What Customers Liked

Some of CosMc’s most-talked-about menu items included:

  • French Toast Galaxy Latte
  • Pistachio Swirl Shaken Espresso
  • Island Pick-Me-Up Punch
  • Breakfast sandwiches and soft serve
  • Energy drinks with customizable boosts

The locations also turned heads with their blue-and-yellow interiors and space-themed branding, a nod to the original CosMc’s character from McDonaldland lore.

What’s Next

For now, McDonald’s customers can expect to see more beverage options hitting menus in the near future, possibly inspired by CosMc’s experimental line. No specific drinks have been confirmed yet, but keep an eye on your local McDonald’s for changes to the drink menu.

If you’ve been a fan of CosMc’s or wanted to try it, this is your last call. The brand may be wrapping up, but it’s clear that McDonald’s isn’t done innovating in the drink space.
