Arne Slot wants more than just one Premier League title with Liverpool.
After guiding the Reds to the top in his first season in charge, the Dutchman has laid down a new challenge for his squad , to become serial winners.
Liverpool will lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield this Sunday after their final game of the season against Crystal Palace. But Slot isn’t ready to bask in the glory just yet. He’s already looking ahead to next season and questioning whether his team has what it takes to dominate consistently.
“I think we have a lot to compete next season again,” Slot said. “But what I don’t know yet , and that’s going to be the interesting one , is if we have this elite mentality, this serial winner mentality of showing up season after season.”
Slot’s point is clear: winning once is great, but staying at the top is where the real test lies. “Many teams have won the Premier League once but not many have won it multiple seasons in a row, and that’s for a reason,” he added. “First of all, because it’s difficult. Not every player has that elite mentality.”
The Premier League title win is Liverpool’s first under Slot, but it’s also a historic moment. Sunday will mark the first time in 35 years that Liverpool fans get to celebrate a league title in front of a packed Anfield. Their 2020 title came during the COVID-19 pandemic, with no fans allowed in the stadium.
Slot emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment, especially for the supporters. “I think this should be a day that everybody is going to enjoy,” he said. “It’s been 35 years that Liverpool have been waiting for this moment.”
There’s also the looming topic of Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose reported departure has sparked mixed emotions among the fanbase. Despite the uncertainty, Slot made it clear that the right-back deserves his moment on the big day.
“One of my players is Trent, so he definitely deserves to be there,” said Slot. “He’s been part of an incredibly successful season and incredibly successful years at this club.”
Slot’s comments paint the picture of a manager with his eyes firmly on the bigger picture. Winning the league is only step one. Building a legacy, and turning Liverpool into a dominant force year after year, is the next big goal.
Whether the players can adopt that elite mindset is something Slot says he’ll find out when pre-season begins on July 8. Until then, he wants Sunday to be about the fans, the players, and a moment Liverpool has been waiting for since 1990.
No fluff, no fuss, just a call to greatness.
