Real Madrid have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe has been discharged from the hospital after recovering from an acute case of gastroenteritis.
The French forward, 26, had been ruled out of Madrid’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on June 18 in Miami, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mbappe was admitted to hospital earlier in the week after falling ill and missed team training sessions leading up to the game. Despite some signs of improvement, manager Xabi Alonso had stated before the match that Mbappe “was feeling a little better, but not enough,” and made the decision to rest him.
The club issued a statement on their official website confirming Mbappe’s condition had improved significantly: “Our player Kylian Mbappe was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp. Mbappe will continue receiving specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.”
As it stands, there’s still uncertainty over whether Mbappe will feature in Madrid’s next match against Pachuca on Sunday, June 22. Alonso, speaking after the draw against Al-Hilal, said: “I don’t know if Mbappe will be back for the next game. We’ll see. He wasn’t doing well in the last two days. He’s sick.”
During the match in Miami, Gonzalo Garcia opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the 34th minute, but the lead was short-lived. Ruben Neves equalized for Al-Hilal from the penalty spot just seven minutes later. Madrid had a chance to win it in stoppage time, but Federico Valverde missed a penalty, and the game ended 1-1.
That draw marked the first time Madrid has failed to win a match in the history of their Club World Cup appearances, adding pressure on Alonso’s side to deliver in the upcoming fixture.
Alonso reflected on the game by saying: “The first half was not as good as the second. We improved after the break, had better chances and more control. Every game is a learning opportunity. We take the positives and work on what we can improve.”
He also praised the turnout in Miami, saying the support from fans around the world was felt by the squad: “We had great support, it was a great crowd, we have really big fans from all over the world and we are delighted with that.”
As Mbappe continues his recovery, Madrid will be hoping their star forward can return in time to help push for the title. Whether he’s fit for Sunday remains to be seen, but his discharge from the hospital is a promising sign for both the player and the club.
