Wellesley Bolt, father of eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, has passed away at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed by the Jamaican Observer on Monday, March 31.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Bolt, and their three children: Usain, Sadiki, and Christine Bolt-Hylton. Wellesley was widely regarded as a humble, steady figure who played a crucial role in nurturing and supporting the world’s fastest man during his rise to global stardom.
Tributes poured in following the announcement of his death, with Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness posting a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter):
“Mr. Bolt was the father of a global icon and a strong, quiet force behind one of Jamaica’s greatest sons. His presence, support, and guidance helped to shape a legacy that continues to inspire the world.”
Holness offered condolences to the entire Bolt family, praising Usain’s well-known devotion to his parents and siblings, adding, “As you grieve this great loss, the prayers and support of an entire nation are with you.”
Opposition leader and PNP President Mark J. Golding also expressed his sorrow: “Your father’s unwavering support, guidance, and love were an important part of the foundation of your incredible journey… Jamaica mourns in solidarity with you.”
Wellesley Bolt was a well-known figure in Sherwood Content, Trelawny — the northern Jamaican village where Usain’s journey to track-and-field greatness began. He ran a small local supermarket in the community until 2017, preferring to live a quiet life even as his son became one of the most famous athletes in the world.
While Wellesley was a constant source of support, he often avoided the global spotlight. He notably skipped Usain’s first Olympic 100m final at the 2008 Beijing Games due to flight anxiety and the tension of watching such a high-stakes event. Still, he remained one of Usain’s biggest supporters throughout his career and attended several later competitions.
The Bolt family was a fixture at Usain’s competitions during his career, cheering him on from the stands as he became a world champion and global icon. Usain Bolt retired from professional athletics in 2017 but continues to be one of Jamaica’s most revered public figures.
The passing of Wellesley Bolt is being felt deeply across Jamaica and the global sporting community. Known for his humility and steady presence, he is remembered not just as the father of a legend, but as a cornerstone of a family that helped shape Olympic history.
A memorial service is expected to be announced in the coming days.
