CD Projekt Red has officially ruled out The Witcher 4 releasing before 2027, leaving fans both excited and frustrated over the long wait for the next installment in the legendary RPG franchise.
While the game’s storyline, characters, and gameplay remain under wraps, recent financial statements from the publisher provide some insight into what’s coming next.
The Witcher 4: What We Know So Far
CD Projekt Red initially suggested there wouldn’t be a direct sequel to The Witcher 3, but after the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, they changed direction. Now, The Witcher 4 is officially in development, and it’s confirmed that Ciri would be the main protagonist instead of Geralt.
The only confirmed footage so far is a pre-rendered trailer, and the company’s latest financial report clarified that the game will not release before December 31, 2026, making 2027 the earliest possible launch window.
“We are not going to announce the precise launch date for the game yet,” said Piotr Nielubowicz, CD Projekt Red’s Chief Financial Officer. “All we could share now to give more visibility to investors is that the game will not be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends December 31, 2026.”
Fans React to The Witcher 4 News
The news has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While some are excited that the game is in active development, others are frustrated by the long wait – especially given the studio’s past delays with Cyberpunk 2077.
- “Take your time, CDPR. Make sure it’s perfect. No Cyberpunk-style launch, please!” – A fan on Reddit.
- “I’ll be 30 by the time this game comes out… That’s wild.” – A Twitter user reacting to the news.
- “Ciri as the lead? If true, this will be the best thing ever!” – A fan comment on YouTube.
Many gamers are also wondering what the new protagonist will be like, with speculation that Geralt’s story is officially over and The Witcher 4 will introduce a fresh perspective on the Continent.
CD Projekt Red’s Expanding Universe
Beyond The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has several other projects in development, including:
- The Witcher 1 Remake – Originally expected to launch first, but now seems to be delayed.
- Project Sirius – A multiplayer spin-off set in The Witcher universe, still in early development.
- Project Orion – The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, which is only now entering pre-production.
- Project Hadar – A brand-new IP, still shrouded in mystery.
CD Projekt Red also revealed a new partnership with Pokémon Go owner Scopely, working on an unnamed title based on one of its existing franchises. While details are scarce, it’s expected to be related to either The Witcher or Cyberpunk universes.
What This Means for The Witcher Fans
While it’s exciting to see CD Projekt Red committing to expanding The Witcher universe, the long wait for The Witcher 4 means fans will likely have to settle for remakes and spin-offs in the meantime.
With a potential 2027 release window, development could still face delays. But one thing is clear – The Witcher 4 is coming, and when it does, it could redefine the franchise.
