
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in New York City
Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, December 4, 2024.
The New York Police Department confirmed that Thompson, 50, was shot in the chest near the New York Hilton on Sixth Avenue shortly before 7 a.m. He was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Details of the Incident
Thompson was visiting New York City from Minnesota to attend an investor conference scheduled for the same day. The police have not confirmed whether he was staying at the New York Hilton. Witnesses reported that the suspect, described as a 6’1″ man wearing a black jacket, black hat, black ski mask, and carrying a black backpack, fled north after the shooting. The NYPD believes it was a targeted attack.
Police Investigation
The NYPD is actively investigating the case. A press conference is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to provide further updates. No arrests have been made, and authorities have launched a citywide manhunt to locate the suspect.
Thompson’s Legacy
Brian Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. He previously led the company’s government programs, overseeing Medicare & Retirement and Community & State divisions. Under his leadership, UnitedHealth Group remained a major player in the healthcare industry, ranking 8th on Fortune’s 2024 list of the world’s largest companies.

UnitedHealth Group expressed their condolences and suspended the investor conference following the incident. A staff member addressed attendees, stating, “We’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members, and as a result, we’re going to have to bring the event to a close.”
