Big festivals are surely tanking this festival season and the latest one to bite the dust is the infamous Burning Man which is held in Black Rock City.
Burning Man was supposed to take place from August 30th to 7th September this year and will not be taking place due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Here’s what the Burning Man Project blog announced regarding their decision.
After much listening, discussion, and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to build Black Rock City in 2020. Given the painful reality of COVID-19, one of the greatest global challenges of our lifetimes, we believe this is the right thing to do. Yes, we are heartbroken. We know you are too. In 2020 we need human connection and Immediacy more than ever. But public health and the well-being of our participants, staff, and neighbors in Nevada are our highest priorities.

Burning Man Project’s CEO Marian Goodell also shared a heartwarming message in a video, watch below.
The announcement does come with a silver lining as Burning Man has decided to hold a Virtual Burn with a ticketing dynamic added to it. Here is what they had to say about the Virtual burn.
“In this Multiverse, Black Rock City will be online, and everyone will be welcome to join in. On a virtual playa, there’s no limit to who can participate. Like that thing in The Desert, we will have costs and will need to create some kind of “tickets”. We’re working out those details and will share them as soon as we can. It won’t be like the BRC we’ve built over the years; we know there’s no substitute for an in-person experience. It will be a new kind of Burn. We want to co-create BRC online with 100,000 participants to share our passions, explore fun new ways to live more sustainably, connect in these challenging times, and take care of one another.”
The announcement has also mentioned that the project is fully committed to providing refunds but has urged their patrons to also donate to the project if possible and to not refund fully if they have no immediate use for it.
Given the fact that Burning Man is a non-profit organization, the monetary status of the project directly depends on the sales made each year and paying their artists and workers might turn severely hard during these testing times.
As the iconic festival declares its cancellation, we stand together to appreciate the hard work done by numerous artists that toiled every day to bring forward a great experience to the campers and we look forward to everything that Burning Man 2021 has to offer.
