Grammy nominated producer, Nic Fanciulli will embark on a ground-breaking Around The World Tour, a global sprint that will see him playing across multiple continents over a period of just 10 days this spring. In a landmark step for dance music scene in India, India’s leading and largest music promoters, Submerge have partnered with the world’s largest independent music festival brand, Ultra Worldwide to bring to Indian shores a first-of-its-kind initiative – The Resistance: Around The World Tour With Nic Fanciulli.

We managed to catch up with Nic and talk about the whole “Ultra Worldwide & Resistance present AROUND THE WORLD with Nic Fanciulli” concept. Read on to know what he had to say. :)

T.H.E – Hi Nic. Thank you for taking the time out for this interview. How are you?

Nic – I’m excellent, looking forward to being back in India for the first time in around 4 years!

T.H.E – Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you discover your love for underground house and techno?

Nic – I grew up on Indie music initially, bands like the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays – then in around 1995, one of my friends brothers played me an album by Underworld, and i really started getting into that more electronic sound. Over a period of time this progressed and i started listening to guys like the Chemical Brothers, Francois K and Laurent Garnier, then delving deeper into the genre and listening to DJ’s like Lee Burridge – fast forward a few years and I was working in a record shop and completely immersed in electronic music. I guess it was a gradual transition looking back on it, but it was never something I intended to do.

T.H.E – The whole idea of the “Resistance” concept is unique. Tell us more about the entire concept and how it feels to be associated with it.

Nic – I’m really happy to be working with the Ultra guys on this project. They’re massive believers in what we do, and are really supportive of the whole electronic music scene, no matter what genre. Resistance for them was more of an outlet I think – these are guys that come from a very solid musical background, and its about catering to all your audiences needs – whether that’s big MainStage EDM music, or smaller, more niche genres – so we couldn’t have picked a better partner for this tour.

T.H.E – Ultra Music Festival is mainly known for its mainstage acts and commercial dance music. With UMF launching the “Resistance” concept which will ‘urge fans to go against the grain’, do you feel that this move will definitely increase the number of people listening to alternative genres? If yes, is it a good thing?

Nic – Of course it’s a good thing. Ultra Music Festival was never a “commercial” music festival – it always appealed to a global electronic sound. I remember the very first lineup in 1999 had guys like Josh Wink on it, as well as people like Paul van Dyk – so it’s always been across the board in terms of the bookings; it was more the explosion of dance music that affected the festival, not vice versa, I think. That said, i think anything that urges people to delve deeper into the genre is a good thing – guys like David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Avicii are actually helping the Underground scene in the sense that these kids get introduced to electronic dance music at an entry level, and over time, delve deeper and deeper into it, discovering new sounds they like – so it’s all a process that starts at the top.

T.H.E – You have time and again, given a chance to upcoming producers via your imprint, Saved Records. Tell us a bit on how it came about and the thinking behind the label name.

Nic – It was a really basic concept. When we first started producing we would have to save tracks to a disk – all the good records we saved, and all the other bits we didn’t like, we wouldn’t.

T.H.E – Tell us a bit more about the ‘Around The World’ concept – what are you hoping to achieve? What’s the message?

Nic – We wanted to actually fly around the world on this tour, and the only real way to do that in a short period of time was to visit 8 cities across a 10 day period – we needed the extra 2 days to fly over the international date lines, so technically we have a show every day in a different country. We’re inviting press along for the ride, and making a documentary about the whole thing – so it’s a big project, and something that i’m super excited about. We’re working with a lot of global partners to bring special mixes, photos, blogs, videos etc. from each of the shows as well. It’s all about a shared global experience; its fascinating to me how small the world has become with all the new technologic advances even over the last 5-10 years – to be able to visit countries and cities that i’ve never been to before, places like Manila and Mumbai, as well as see some of my oldest and closest friends in cities like Tokyo and San Francisco, all within a 10 day period is really exciting to me, and hopefully all the media coverage will give you a greater insight into the life of a touring DJ.

T.H.E – What are you looking forward to the most on your visit to Mumbai, India?

Nic – I haven’t been to India since 2011 I think! Mumbai has always been a city that’s fascinated me – the culture, the food, the people – so i really wanted an opportunity to visit, and to bring something special with me. We won’t be in the city very long, but it’s nice to be able to give the fans in the area something back as they’re always so supportive across social media, and asking when we’re coming to visit.

T.H.E – Thanks again Nic for this interview. We look forward to seeing you live and wish you all the best for your future endeavours. :)
