Fox has made the official announcement that its animated sitcom The Great North will not be renewed for its sixth season.
The news comes only two weeks after the 20th Television Animation series concluded its fifth season, ending a five-year run for the Alaskan-set comedy from Bob’s Burgers producers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.
Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, released a statement expressing gratitude to the show’s creators and team. “We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren, and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,” Thorn said. “It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons the series brought to our Animation Domination lineup.”
The cancellation of The Great North officially brings to a close the book on Fox’s 2025 “bubble shows,” which also encompassed dramas Rescue HI-Surf, Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit, and The Cleaning Lady. Of these, Accused is currently on hold with possible revival for a limited event run, while the rest have all been axed.
While the Rescue HI-Surf choice was determined in May, Alert, The Cleaning Lady, and The Great North’s futures were determined following their latest seasons. Alert and The Cleaning Lady were canceled in June, and The Great North joined them shortly afterward.
Speculation regarding the future of the show had been growing since it was significantly left out of Fox’s sweeping four-year renewal agreement with 20th Television Animation earlier in the year. That agreement granted multi-season renewals to flagship animated phenomenons The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Bob’s Burgers, in addition to bringing American Dad! back to the network. American Dad! and renewals of fresher animated shows Krapopolis and Grimsburg left Fox’s animation slate particularly packed, marking the end for The Great North.
Developed by Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux along with writer Minty Lewis, The Great North chronicled the warm and offbeat escapades of the Tobin family in Alaska. The show revolved around single father Beef Tobin, voiced by Nick Offerman, who struggled to keep his children near as he raised them in the Alaskan bush. His daughter Judy, voiced by Jenny Slate, aspired to a creative life beyond the family fishing vessel, experimenting with her independence through her work at the local mall.
The other Tobin siblings were older brother Wolf (Will Forte) and his wife Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan), middle brother Ham (Paul Rust), and the baby of the family Moon (Aparna Nancherla), who was famous for his wise-beyond-his-years attitude. Judy frequently asked for advice from her boss Alyson (Megan Mullally) and even her imagined mentor Alanis Morissette, who provided voice-overs for herself and materialized via the Northern Lights.
The series received critical acclaim for its genuine comedy and robust ensemble cast, making it Fox’s first hit new animated comedy since Bob’s Burgers. Developed by 20th Television Animation and animated by Bento Box Entertainment, the series combined warm family relationships with quirky humor and Alaskan charm.
In addition to the Molyneux sisters, the creator of Bob’s Burgers, Loren Bouchard, was an executive producer. The Molyneux brothers also served as showrunners, keeping the show at the same level of offbeat humor and heartfelt drama that made Bob’s Burgers a success.
With the series cancellation, The Great North ends on a good five seasons, leaving behind a loyal fanbase and a legacy as a precious, long-lasting addition to Fox’s competitive animated lineup. As much as its run has come to a close, fans still cheer for the Tobin family’s distinctive, heartfelt experiences in the North.
