Paul Feig’s Initial Doubts About ‘Another Simple Favor’
Paul Feig had serious reservations about making a sequel to the 2018 hit A Simple Favor. Despite the film’s cult following, the director was hesitant to proceed unless the script met high expectations. “There were a lot of times in the development of this I tried to kill it,” Feig admitted. “If we don’t get it right, let’s not do it.”
At one point, a script was already greenlit, but Feig made significant changes after listening to fan expectations. “We actually had a script that was greenlit, and we threw 70% of it out,” he explained. “I’m not about fan service, but I don’t want to rug-pull an audience either.”
Returning Characters and New Twists
In A Simple Favor, mommy vlogger Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) unravels the mystery of her missing friend Emily (Blake Lively), only to discover that Emily faked her own death. Stephanie secretly records Emily’s confession, leading to her arrest. In the sequel, Another Simple Favor, Emily is back – out of prison and more mysterious than ever. Now engaged to the enigmatic Dante (Michele Morrone), Emily invites Stephanie to be her maid of honor at a lavish wedding in Capri, Italy.
Golding reprises his role as Sean, while Elizabeth Perkins takes over Jean Smart’s role as Emily’s mother. Allison Janney joins the cast as Emily’s aunt, adding another layer of intrigue.
Blake Lively’s Iconic Emily and Anna Kendrick’s Stronger Stephanie
Feig credits Lively’s creative input for making Emily one of his favorite characters. “It’s not who she is at all,” he said. “Blake is just the sweetest kind of Earth Mother. But she can snap into this character and just be so biting and scary, but funny at the same time.”
Similarly, Kendrick pushed for Stephanie’s character evolution. Originally, Feig envisioned Stephanie reacting nervously when Emily reappeared at her book signing. But Kendrick reminded him, “I put her in jail once.” Feig agreed and adjusted the script to reflect Stephanie’s newfound confidence.
Collaborative Filmmaking and Breaking Stereotypes
Feig is known for his collaborative approach to filmmaking. “The idea that movie stars just show up and do exactly what’s written – it doesn’t happen,” he said. “Everybody collaborates.”
Addressing rumors of tension between Lively and co-stars, Feig dismissed them as sexist speculation. “People try to invent drama when two women work together,” he said, citing his positive experience directing Bridesmaids. “Of course, it was the greatest experience of my life.”
Will There Be Another Sequel?
With Another Simple Favor arriving on Amazon Prime Video on May 1, fans are already wondering if a third film is in the works. Feig isn’t ruling it out but emphasizes that the decision lies with the actors. “For Bridesmaids, it’s up to Kristen Wiig,” he teased. “If she wants to do it, I’m in.”
