Rachel Brosnahan Slams Actors Who Trash Superhero Movies After Starring in Them

Rachel Brosnahan isn’t holding back when it comes to actors who bash superhero movies after starring in them.

In a new interview with Amanda Seyfried for Interview magazine, the 34-year-old actress—who plays Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, voiced her frustration with the trend.

“I don’t know why people say yes only to then turn around and complain about it,” she said. “Look, I don’t want to s*** on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them. Do it or don’t do it, and then stand by it.”

Brosnahan, best known for her Emmy-winning role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, made it clear she’s proud to be part of the Superman legacy. She acknowledged the genre’s big action scenes and spectacle, but teased that the new movie has deeper elements as well.

“The cool thing about it is that it’s what you expect, and then there’s more. Of course, there’s great fighting and stunts and big monsters and good and evil,” she explained.

While she thinks being involved in the Superman universe is exciting, Brosnahan admitted it can be daunting too.

“People have such strong feelings about him and the world and whoever’s in charge of it,” she said. “It’s cool to be a part of something that people are so passionate about. It’s definitely intimidating, too.”

According to Brosnahan, Superman remains relatable because of his identity struggles. “He loves people, but he’s an alien. He’s trying to fit in and walk among people and wants to be like them, but he also knows that he’ll never be quite like them, and that can be isolating,” she said. “I feel like that’s part of why so many people see themselves in him.”

She added that everyone deals with feeling like an outsider at some point. “I feel like we all have a little bit of that duelling identity,” she reflected.

Superman, written and directed by James Gunn, is one of DC Studios’ most anticipated films. David Corenswet will don the cape as the titular hero. Gunn, speaking earlier to The Hollywood Reporter, emphasized the importance of heroes in today’s world.

“People are looking for heroes right now,” Gunn said. “They are looking for values of goodness, looking for people who are good and decent human beings. And Superman is that.”

Warner Bros. is going all in on the promotional campaign for the movie. CEO David Zaslav is reportedly backing the film with full support.

“DZ loves what we’re doing, loves the movie, and has really rallied the entire company behind Superman for this summer,” Gunn added.

With Rachel Brosnahan embracing the role of Lois Lane and standing up for the genre, fans can expect a fresh take on Superman—one that’s grounded, passionate, and fully committed.
