Why Queen Camilla Is Staying Silent on the Harry-Charles Fallout

Queen Camilla is keeping a very safe distance from the ongoing royal rift between King Charles and Prince Harry-and she has no plans to step in.

With the father-son relationship strained to a breaking point and Prince William also remaining distant, Camilla is quietly steering clear of the drama. A royal insider spilled to PEOPLE that the Queen “stays out of it,” refusing to wade into the emotional chaos between her husband and stepson.

The fracture dates back to 2020, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal roles and moved to the U.S., marking the start of a bitter fallout. That divide only deepened with high-profile interviews, a controversial Netflix docuseries, and Harry’s explosive 2023 memoir, Spare. In it, he called Camilla “dangerous” and accused her of leaking damaging stories to the press to boost her own image. Harry even described her as someone who “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.” His memoir gave raw insight into how he felt about her marrying King Charles back in 2005, saying it brought “complex emotions” and further distance between them.

In a 2023 interview with Good Morning America, Harry elaborated on those feelings, saying Camilla had a reputation to fix and may have made “deals or trades” early on with the media to secure her place. Despite all that, he softened slightly, saying they’re “perfectly pleasant” now when they do see each other and that he doesn’t see her as an “evil stepmother.” But it’s clear there’s no warm relationship there.

As the King continues treatment for cancer, many hoped a reconciliation might be on the table. But when Harry and Charles were both in Canada in May, they didn’t meet-a sign that the gap between them isn’t closing anytime soon. Meanwhile, William, 42, has shown no interest in reconnecting with his younger brother either, and Charles’ inner circle isn’t pushing for peace.

According to royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, one of the biggest problems is trust-or the lack of it. She says both Charles and William fear anything they say will end up in the press. After all the media coverage from Harry and Meghan in recent years, palace insiders believe there’s no guarantee that private conversations will stay private.

Valentine Low, author of the upcoming book Power and the Palace, adds that King Charles doesn’t have anyone in his corner urging him to be the bigger person. He’s surrounded by aides-including Clive Alderton, who was slammed in Spare-who are unlikely to advise him to reach out. “There is not a good angel in his ear to say, ‘Be a good dad and make the first move,’” Low says.

Even when Harry has attempted to reconnect, it hasn’t landed well. In May, after losing a legal appeal over his U.K. security, Harry gave a shocking BBC interview, saying his father “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff” and making a pointed comment that he doesn’t “know how much longer my father has.” While Harry insists the remark wasn’t meant to be an attack, royal insiders say it only made things worse and makes Charles even less likely to initiate a conversation.

At the heart of it all, Queen Camilla is staying composed and completely uninvolved. As the tension continues to simmer between King Charles and Prince Harry, Camilla has chosen the quiet path-and that may be the only reason this feud hasn’t flared up into something even bigger.
