Sarah Jessica Parker won’t be turning heads at this year’s Met Gala, and no, it’s not a dramatic snub, it’s just work.
The iconic Sex and the City star, who’s been a Met regular since 1995, revealed she won’t be making an appearance on the iconic red carpet this year because she’s tied up with professional commitments. At 60, Parker has her plate full and told Entertainment Tonight that she simply “has to work,” but she’s still totally invested in the magic of the evening.
The annual event, happening Monday, May 5, is themed “Superfine” this year, celebrating centuries of Black fashion excellence. And even though Sarah Jessica Parker can’t be there physically, she made it clear she still deeply respects the event. “I care a lot about it,” she said, emphasizing how much effort the curators and organizers put into the exhibit and theme. For someone who’s had some of the most memorable Met Gala looks of all time, missing it this year clearly wasn’t easy.
As the fashion world gears up to interpret the theme in the most elaborate ways possible, SJP says she’s looking forward to seeing how guests “interpret the theme and the sort of homework they did for the assignment.” Translation: She’ll be watching from afar and probably judging those fits like the rest of us.
While her fashion sense remains top-tier, don’t expect her to be passing that down directly to her daughters. When asked if her 15-year-old twins, Marion and Tabitha, come to her for fashion advice, Parker admitted, “They don’t.” She clarified that while they come to her like any other teens would ask a parent questions, their conversations have nothing to do with her fashion legacy. “It’s a rather routine question that a child may ask a parent for advice,” she said. “It’s not because I spent time in a pretty dress.”
Still, there are sweet moments. “Sometimes it’s nice to be able to say, ‘Yes, borrow this bag,’” she said, happy that her daughters still come to her and husband Matthew Broderick for guidance now and then.
Sarah Jessica Parker might be sitting this Met Gala out, but that doesn’t mean she’s lost her love for the event, or her iconic place in fashion history.
