Why Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Ghosted the 2025 Met Gala

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce didn’t hit the 2025 Met Gala carpet, and no, it wasn’t because they weren’t invited.

The power couple, both 35, actually were on the guest list for this year’s fashion event, but decided to sit it out. Sources told TMZ that the reason was simple: schedules just didn’t line up. After months of nonstop work, the couple is finally getting some well-earned rest, and they’re not giving that up, even for the Met.

Taylor wrapped up another leg of her Eras Tour, and Travis finished his Super Bowl-winning season with the Kansas City Chiefs, so downtime is sacred right now. “They have been traveling nonstop and very much enjoy it,” a source told PEOPLE last month. “They are making the most of their time off together. They are hanging out with friends, too. It’s a special time for them.” And while it’s not exactly a total disappearance from the spotlight, it’s clear they’re prioritizing privacy. The source added that they’re “very serious and in sync,” with both stars focusing on keeping things lowkey.

It’s kind of a shame though, because if Kelce had shown up, it would’ve been his Met Gala debut. Imagining his bold locker room-to-runway style on those famous steps? A missed moment, for sure. Swift, on the other hand, is basically a Met Gala veteran. Her last appearance, though, was almost a decade ago, back in 2016 when she co-chaired the Manus x Machina-themed gala and stepped out in a metallic Louis Vuitton mini dress and platinum blonde hair. That look low-key kicked off her Reputation era and definitely made waves.

Taylor first attended the gala in 2008 during her Fearless era, wearing a glittery gold Badgley Mischka gown. She followed up in 2010 in a sleek Ralph Lauren white dress with her signature red lip, shifting into her Speak Now aesthetic. In 2011, she went full glam in a J. Mendel gown at the “Savage Beauty” gala, and her 2014 Oscar de la Renta moment, silky pink and absolutely ethereal, is still a fan favorite.

This year’s Met Gala was themed around the Met’s spring 2025 exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and the dress code was “Tailored for You,” focusing on menswear and the art of suiting. The night was co-chaired by Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and of course, Anna Wintour, with LeBron James as honorary chair. The exhibit, curated by Andrew Bolton and inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion, took a deep dive into Black dandyism and how Black style has evolved from the 1700s to today.

Still, even with all that fashion heat, Taylor and Travis stayed MIA. And honestly? Can’t blame them. After everything they’ve accomplished lately, laying low and doing nothing probably felt better than any red carpet ever could.
