Chasing Abbey Interview

Having grown up and shared a love of music together, Ro, Bee, and TeddyC have an unparalleled charisma that culminates in an explosive live show.

We caught up with Chasing Abbey, and spoke about the story behind their name, and their upcoming ‘Odyssey Project’ EP.

T.H.E – Hey guys! Welcome to T.H.E – Music Essentials. How did “Chasing Abbey” come together, and what does the name signify?

Chasing Abbey – The three of us went to the same school together in Tullamore. A school competition came up with the opportunity to perform a song on the local radio station. Our music teacher, Stacy Hogan, brought the three of us together to take part in that competition and it was the first time the three of us played music together as a group.

When we started making music, we didn’t have a name so we were just making music for the love of it. We have loads of slang and words we use all the time, basically, everything has a nickname, so one day we nicknamed our audience ‘Abbey’. From there we would just be making tunes and if we were feeling it and really vining with it we would just joke saying “oh Abbey would love this” (Abbey isn’t an actual person, it’s just a genderless nickname we came up with). From there we kind of realised that the more we were joking saying “oh Abbey’s gonna love this” etc. the closer we were to making good music that was gonna help us chase our dream… and so ‘Chasing Abbey’.

T.H.E – How would you describe your sound?

Chasing Abbey – Our sound is a blend of Hip-hop/RnB/Trap/Urban/Pop with lots of melodic hooks.

T.H.E – What were your first interactions with music, and which artists inspired you at the time?

Chasing Abbey – All our families love music and introduced us to music at an early age. Where we come from in Ireland the first music you’re introduced to is Traditional Irish Music, so at that time we were inspired by more Traditional artists such as Gerry O’Connor, Christy Moore, Paul Brady, Johny Cash, Elvis and so on.

T.H.E – Tell us a bit about the ‘Odyssey Project’ EP that comes out next month. How long has it been in the works and what can fans expect from it?

Chasing Abbey – The Odyssey Project was written in a 4 week period, just off the back of our headline tour in September of 2018. The tour was amazing and just really inspired us. So much so, that the day after the tour ended we hit the studio straight away. The Odyssey Project reflects our journey from the very beginning up until now. It highlights the trials and tribulations we have faced but also the good times we have had too. It’s just been an absolute journey for us, full of ups and downs, and we feel ‘The Odyssey Project’ really captures it. As for the name, ‘The Odyssey Project’, it comes from a video game Teddy was playing at the time we were in the studio writing for the project. He was playing ‘Assassins Creed Odyssey’. He just really loved the word ‘Odyssey’ and when we learned its true meaning we knew that’s what the EP had to be called. An epic journey.

Fans can expect a little something for everyone in ‘The Odyssey Project’.

T.H.E – Are there any collaborations to look forward to?

Chasing Abbey – This is something we’re working on at the moment, but we can’t confirm anything just yet.

T.H.E – Given that there are 3 of you; do you guys feel the need to do collaborations with other artists? How does it work?

Chasing Abbey – Firstly, we love working with other artists and it’s always a new experience and we always learn something new from each individual artist. The three of us produce and write all of our stuff so there’s a couple of ways artists could collaborate with us. The most common situation would probably be where the three of us have a track; fully written and produced by ourselves and we get artists to feature a verse or get a producer to add some additional production to the track. Another way we could collaborate would be where we just supply the beat/music for an artist to write/record vocals over. Lastly, we can work with producers to co-produce a beat that we will put lyrics over.

T.H.E – What can you tell us about your plans for 2019, from a touring and production standpoint?

Chasing Abbey – Our plans for 2019 are to release ‘They Odyssey Project’ in April, then do a series of headline and festival shows from April to around August. In between all of that we hope to get 1 or 2 more singles out and announce an Irish/UK tour sometime in Autumn. We have loads of plans for music videos and other exciting content too, so it’s gonna be a very busy, exciting year.

T.H.E – Lastly, name 5 artists in the industry that you would want to collaborate with?

Chasing Abbey –

Travis Scott
Drake
Stormzy
Cardi B
Dave
Post Malone.
