Catch our chat with Ken where he talks about ‘Serenade’, and the importance of getting support from big DJs in the industry.
T.H.E – Hey Ken! Welcome to T.H.E Music Essentials. How has 2018 been for you?
Ken Bauer – 2018 has been great so far thanks, with a lot of remixes done for Swedish acts on major labels, such as Ninetone Records on Universal Music to name one.
T.H.E – You have received quite a lot of global support from industry heavy-weights in recent times, how important would you say this is for a producer when they are making a name for themselves?
Ken Bauer – I would say it is very important. Getting support from heavy-weight DJs and major playlists serve both as a proof of high-quality music, as well as helping you get through to the masses.
T.H.E – Is this something that dictates the thought-process you deploy, when you make new tracks?
Ken Bauer – I wish I could say no. But to be honest it does. My own criticism towards my work gets higher/tougher for each playlist and festival I get featured on, making it almost impossible to finish a track. Lol.
T.H.E – You have managed to deliver the goods once again with your new single – ‘Serenade’. What was your inspiration for the track?
Ken Bauer – It was actually a friend of mine who works as a radio DJ in Spain that mentioned he wished someone could make a fresh club banger, with a nice guitar breakdown that would be playable on the radio as well. I came up with this idea. I sent him an early mix and he loved it so I decided to finish it. I sent it to a few DJs as well, asking for their comments and I was thrilled to hear that two of my favorite female DJs, Niki Belucci and Sophie Francis thought the track was cool.
T.H.E – Let’s talk about your musical background for a bit. How did you ‘discover’ (for lack of a better word) your sound?
Ken Bauer – I love listening to Trance music and am a big fan of both Armin Van Buuren and Tiesto. However, it was a friend of mine working as a DJ who introduced me to House and I just love the tempo and feeling of 128 BPM. I love hard sounds but also the nice melodies in Trance, so I try to mix the best of both worlds. In lack of better terms, I call my music Badass House.
T.H.E – What are your must-haves in the studio, whilst producing?
Ken Bauer – Hardware-wise, it would be my Fostex TH900 reference headphones that I always use to reference my own tracks with records from my favourite DJs such as Hardwell, Quintino, Dada Life & Nicky Romero. Software-wise, I would say, Serum, Serum & Serum. Steve Duda really created a monster with this one.
T.H.E – And finally, what’s next for you on the production front?
Ken Bauer – I still have some remixes that I need to deliver for a few Swedish artists, as well as having a really interesting collaboration with multi-talented LA-based artist J-Rob MD. I am also planning to release a few of my own original tracks, before the end of 2018.
