Pittsburgh-based producer Buku and Reno’s SubDocta are joining forces for a wonderfully weird bass anthem on Bassrush Records.

“Sweet & Sour” draws inspiration from its namesake, serving up a delectable dichotomy. Opening with tribal-inspired percussion and whimsical woodwind melodies, the introduction offers a sense of mystical intrigue. The added chants deepen the thematic tie-in, elevating the sense of exotic wonder while priming listeners for what’s to come. The drops pack a powerful punch mixing gritty low-end, dizzying synth patterns, perfectly placed samples, and a proclivity for evolution. Buku provides insight into the collaboration saying, “Preston [SubDocta] and I have been friends for a number of years, and we decided it was time to dive into some music. We both come from somewhat similar worlds of music, which I think shines through with this girthy groover. I think it’s fairly obvious that, between the two of us, he’s the ‘sour’ component of the duo—highlighted by his general angst and behavior. I’m just playing… or am I? Either way, we had a blast with one.”
SubDocta shares his sentiments about working with his longtime friend, stating: “Felt really good after years of friendship and debauchery to work on this tune! Rob [Buku] really is the sweetest boy and such a talented producer. It was an honor to work with, not only a good friend, but an amazing legend in the world of bass music.”
Pittsburgh native Buku has been transforming the bass scene one release at a time for over a decade. With experience as a drummer and a degree in music technology, he’s built a sound that’s truly his own. His impressive releases have been championed by Pete Tong, Diplo, and Zane Lowe, and have earned placements with ESPN, EA Sports ‘Madden,’ Ubisoft, and Capcom. Reno-based SubDocta has been mixing dubstep and bass music to create his signature style of ‘West Coast Wobble’ for years. The seasoned producer is a familiar face on the Bassrush imprint, with previous singles “Torqued,” and “Clapback” alongside Thelem, drawing press support from UKF, Heard It Here First, Orange County EDM, Relentless Beats, and The Dropz.
