The 1975 Are Making a New Album as They Take a Break from Touring

The 1975 are back in the studio, working on a new album – the follow up to their 2022 album, “Being Funny In A Foreign Language.”

With only one show lined up for 2025, headlining Glastonbury on June 27, the band is using the downtime to focus on their sixth studio album.

Matty Healy and the rest of the band have been keeping a low profile since wrapping up their massive Still,  At Their Very Best tour, which ended in March 2024. During the tour, Healy announced that The 1975 would be going on an “indefinite hiatus” from live performances. At their Sacramento show last year, he told fans, “After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus with shows, so it’s wonderful to have you guys with us tonight.”

Their Glastonbury set in June will be their only performance this year. According to the band’s manager and Dirty Hit label head Jamie Oborne, the decision to do just one show was intentional. Speaking on The Money Trench podcast, Oborne said, “It’s such a big gig, and it’s the only show that we’re playing this year. [Matty] thought doing it in isolation would be a really powerful thing. I obviously agreed with him, as I often do.”

Oborne also confirmed that new music is underway. “They’re making a record at the moment. I don’t know when it will come out, but they’re making one,” he said. “I think they’ve earned the right to take their time. The world’s gonna be listening, so it needs to be right.” He even teased that the album already sounds “pretty extraordinary.”

While fans may be eager for new material, it’s clear the band is prioritizing rest and creative freedom. Matty’s mother, TV personality Denise Welch, shared that her son has been worn out from the demands of touring. “Matty is absolutely shattered,” she told OK! magazine. “He’s on a world tour and as much as it’s hard to go, ‘Oh please feel sorry for my boy,’ people don’t realise that it’s gruelling… He’s absolutely exhausted and ready for a break.”

Despite the hiatus, the band isn’t going quiet. Between Glastonbury and studio sessions, 2025 is shaping up to be a key year for The 1975’s evolution. While there’s no release date for the new album yet, fans can rest assured that something special is on the way, and according to those closest to the band, it’ll be worth the wait.
