Juneteenth is right around the corner, and it’s not just about celebrating freedom, it also means a full day of bank and postal service disruptions across the U.S. Recognized as a federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth falls on Wednesday, June 19 this year, and if you’ve got errands involving your bank or the post office, you better handle them now.
Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day, honors the moment in 1865 when more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas were finally told they were free, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The announcement was delivered by Major General Gordon Granger when he landed in Galveston Bay with 2,000 Union troops. That powerful event marked the true end of slavery in the U.S., and today, it’s celebrated with family gatherings, picnics, and even parades.
But beyond the emotion and history, Juneteenth has also become a day where America slows down, at least in terms of banking and mailing. Wondering what’s open and what’s not? Let’s break it down.
If you’re banking in person, don’t count on it. The Federal Reserve shuts down on all national holidays, and so do the banks it regulates. That means major players like Wells Fargo, Chase, CitiBank, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, and Capital One will all close their branches for the day. While Capital One Cafés will remain open, traditional banking services will be paused. If you’re used to stopping by your local branch, plan ahead because most of them will not be open on Wednesday.
That said, not everything is off the table. You’ll still be able to access ATMs and mobile banking apps, but any in-person assistance, deposits, or check cashing will have to wait until Thursday.
To make it easier, here’s a breakdown of major services on Juneteenth:
Service | Open or Closed? | Details |
---|---|---|
Banks (Wells Fargo, etc.) | Closed | Most major banks will shut down for the day. |
Capital One Cafés | Open | Cafés open, but banking services paused. |
Online Banking/ATMs | Open | Available 24/7 during the holiday. |
USPS Post Offices | Closed | No retail transactions or regular mail delivery. |
USPS Priority Express | Open | Still operates daily, even on holidays. |
UPS | Open | Normal pickup and delivery services. |
FedEx | Open | Operating as usual; confirm with local branches. |
Stock Market | Closed | Wall Street shuts down for the federal holiday. |
DMV / State Offices | Closed | Most state-run agencies will not operate. |
Public Schools | Closed | Schools and some college campuses will observe the holiday. |
Trash Collection | Closed (in many areas) | Check local schedules for collection delays. |
Thinking of mailing a package? USPS isn’t going to help you out on Juneteenth. All USPS retail offices will be closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery. So if you’ve got anything urgent to send, either ship it before Wednesday or use Priority Mail Express, which is the only USPS service that runs on holidays.
Luckily, UPS and FedEx are breaking away from the norm. Both companies will remain open on Juneteenth, and pickup and delivery services will continue as usual. However, it’s still smart to check with your local store just to confirm specific hours for that day.
Interestingly, while many banks are temporarily closing for Juneteenth, others are shutting down permanently. Bank of America has already confirmed it will close 19 branches permanently in 2025, and another unnamed banking giant closed 13 locations in a single day. If you’re affected by one of those closures, Juneteenth may feel like a preview of what’s to come.
So, what’s the move? If you need to get your money right, send a package, or hit the DMV, do it before Wednesday. Juneteenth isn’t just a celebration of freedom, it’s a reminder to plan ahead so you’re not caught off guard when everything hits pause for a day.
