Was Spotify hacked?

A few days ago, Spotify was allegedly hacked, with user information being leaked onto another third-party website.

Quite a number of Spotify user’s accounts were breached, with their personal details (including email addresses, passwords, account types and dates of account renewal) being leaked onto a website named Pastebin. Spotify though has claimed that it has “not been hacked” and that its “user records are secure”. Whom do we believe?

“Spotify has not been hacked and our user records are secure. We monitor Pastebin and other sites regularly. When we find Spotify credentials, we first verify that they are authentic, and if they are, we immediately notify affected users to change their passwords.” – a Spotify spokesperson

TechCrunch got down to it by attempting to use several of the accounts to log in. According to their findings, only one actually permitted entry, implying that the breach may have occurred longer ago than first assumed. Several affected users were forced to contact Spotify’s customer service and the streaming company was allegedly ‘too slow’ in resetting passwords and resolving the problem. Reports have been made saying hackers gained access to some users’ Skype, Facebook & Uber accounts due to their tendency to use the same password across platforms.

Make what you want of this, but if I were you I’d hurry up & check my Spotify account!
