David Beckham isn’t holding back – he says taking Inter Miami from an idea to a thriving Major League Soccer team has been the biggest challenge of his entire career.
And that’s coming from a guy who’s played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and the England national team. Beckham, now 49, told People that when he first launched the idea of Inter Miami, he thought it’d all come together fast. But reality hit harder than expected.
“When we first announced it, I thought we’d have the team up and running in a few years,” he said. Instead, it took setbacks, delays, and years of grinding to build something meaningful. Now that the team is finally in full swing, Beckham says the hard work has paid off. “It’s been the biggest challenge that I’ve had in my career and my business life, but it’s been the most rewarding.”
Part of that payoff? Signing Lionel Messi. Beckham promised fans he’d bring world-class players to Miami, and landing Messi – arguably the greatest to ever do it – was a dream move. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I would bring the greatest player to have ever played the game,” he admitted.
Since Messi’s arrival in 2023, the transformation has been wild. Beckham calls it the “Messi effect” – and it’s real. On the field, Messi’s skills are obviously next-level, but Beckham’s just as excited about how the younger players are learning from him. “They’re getting better because of him,” he said.
But the off-field impact might be even bigger. Global attention for the club has exploded. Beckham shared that Inter Miami has “quadrupled everything” since Messi joined. From new sponsors and a global fanbase to a brand-new stadium in the works, Messi’s presence is changing the game – literally and figuratively.
Beckham’s vision is finally coming to life, and while the journey’s been a rollercoaster, he’s clearly proud of where things stand. He’s not just building a soccer team – he’s building a legacy.
What do you thinkwas Messi the smartest move Beckham ever made? And is Inter Miami on its way to becoming the next global football powerhouse?
