Alijah Arenas, the 18-year-old son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, has been placed into a medically induced coma following a serious car crash in Los Angeles early Thursday morning.
According to reports first shared by ESPN’s Shams Charania and later confirmed by TMZ, Alijah was driving a Tesla Cybertruck when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed, leaving it “mangled” and partially on fire.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene around 4:55 a.m., initially responding to a call about a trapped passenger. However, sources indicate that Alijah had already been pulled from the vehicle by the time first responders arrived.
The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed in detail, but the decision to place him into a coma suggests the trauma was severe. It remains unclear whether anyone else was in the vehicle at the time of the crash or if other vehicles were involved.
Alijah Arenas is one of the top basketball prospects in the nation and is committed to play for USC next season. Just weeks ago, he suited up for the McDonald’s All-American Game on April 1, a showcase of the country’s most elite high school talent.
As of Thursday evening, Gilbert Arenas has not publicly commented on the crash. Known as “Agent Zero,” the elder Arenas was a three-time NBA All-Star during his stint with the Washington Wizards and one of the league’s top scorers in the mid-2000s.
