Is Fortnite Down? What to Know About Update 34.40 and When It’ll Be Back

If you tried logging into Fortnite today and got slapped with a loading screen or server error, you’re not alone. Players around the globe are being temporarily booted out, and no, it’s not your internet. Fortnite is officially down for scheduled maintenance as Epic Games rolls out update 34.40.

This downtime isn’t a surprise for longtime players. Fortnite always goes offline when a new patch is released, especially during major seasonal updates or crossover events. But that doesn’t make the wait any easier when you’re just trying to squeeze in a few matches or check out fresh content.

So what’s the deal this time? Update 34.40 is tied to a bunch of anticipated changes, including rumored new skins, weapons, map updates, and possibly a collab that’s got fans buzzing. Leaks over the past week have hinted at Star Wars-themed additions making their way into the game, yes, lightsabers may be returning again. On top of that, balance changes and bug fixes are likely to be part of the package.

According to Epic Games’ official status page and social media posts, servers were taken offline early morning on April 23 (UTC), which usually translates to downtime beginning around 4 AM ET / 1 AM PT. The devs didn’t give an exact time for when Fortnite will be playable again, but if history’s any indicator, we’re looking at around 3-4 hours of maintenance. That means servers could be back up by 7 AM to 8 AM ET (depending on how smoothly everything goes).

During this period, you won’t be able to log in, play, or even access the Fortnite launcher for updates. If you’re stuck staring at the loading screen, just know everyone else is too. It’s not you, it’s Epic.

The good news? This kind of downtime usually means something big is brewing. Whether it’s new cosmetics, storyline progression, or tweaks to your favorite weapons, these updates tend to shake up the Fortnite meta just enough to keep things interesting. Plus, if this really is part of a Star Wars crossover, expect lightsabers, blasters, Force powers, and probably a few V-Buck-draining outfits.

With update 34.40, players can expect some seriously hyped content, most notably, the rumored Fortnite x Star Wars crossover. Leaks hint at new skins like Mace Windu, Captain Phasma, and even a Jar Jar Binks appearance (yes, really). Weapons-wise, lightsabers and Force abilities like Force Lightning are expected to return, along with new ARs and SMGs. There’s also buzz about flyable X-Wings and TIE Fighters joining the mix, and if true, this could be one of the most chaotic and exciting gameplay shake-ups we’ve seen in a while.

While you wait, it’s a good time to check in on Epic’s patch notes (once they go live) or follow FortniteStatus on Twitter for real-time updates. You can also prep your squad, clear some hard drive space, or, dare we say, touch grass.

Fortnite going down is never fun, but update 34.40 is shaping up to be worth the wait. Hang tight, your next Victory Royale will be here before you know it.
