At London Tech Week, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer set a bold direction for the country’s future, stating the UK will be an “AI maker not an AI taker.”
His speech sent a clear message: the UK isn’t just adopting artificial intelligence, it’s building it.
Speaking to a crowd of tech leaders and innovators, Starmer called on the public to “lean in” and embrace AI. He stressed that the UK must stay ahead in the fast-moving tech world. According to the Prime Minister, this is not only vital for boosting the economy but also for shaping the global future of AI.
Backing up Starmer’s commitment, Peter Kyle, the UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, said the country has “big” plans for AI. “We have big plans when it comes to developing the next wave of AI innovations here in the UK,” Kyle said. “Not only so we can deliver the economic growth needed for our Plan for Change, but maintain our position as a global leader.”
A major part of the UK’s strategy involves teaming up with NVIDIA, a U.S.-based tech giant known for powering AI applications worldwide. Together, they’re launching the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum, a national effort to drive AI growth by building stronger infrastructure and collaboration among British businesses.
Kyle emphasized the importance of infrastructure in the AI race. “Central to that is making sure we have the infrastructure to power AI,” he explained. “I welcome NVIDIA setting up the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum, bringing together leading British businesses to develop and deploy this across the UK, so we can drive growth and opportunity.”
NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, joined Starmer at the event and praised the UK’s forward-thinking approach. He made a bold prediction that in the next 10 years, “every industry in the UK will be a tech industry” thanks to the widespread adoption of AI.
This partnership signals a strong step forward in the UK’s goal of becoming a true AI powerhouse. From healthcare to finance, manufacturing to media, AI is poised to transform sectors across the board, and the UK wants to be at the helm of that transformation.
Starmer’s message was clear: the UK has no intention of sitting on the sidelines. With government backing, private sector partnerships, and international collaborations, the nation is gearing up to lead the AI revolution from the front.
By leaning into innovation and investing in core technologies, the UK is positioning itself not just to use AI, but to define it.
In this new tech era, being a UK AI maker is no longer a dream. It’s a goal being actively built, one forum, one partnership, and one innovation at a time.
