Denise Gough, the voice of Yennefer of Vengerberg in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, isn’t sure she’s part of The Witcher 4. Speaking to Eurogamer, the 45-year-old actress said she has no clue what’s happening with the new game.
“I don’t know any of this,” she admitted, revealing that back when she first recorded the part, she didn’t even realize how significant the role was.
Gough had never worked on a video game before, so stepping into Yennefer’s voice was unfamiliar territory. “I didn’t know what I was doing,” she said. It wasn’t until people, mostly men in sound departments, started recognizing her on film sets that she realized just how iconic Yennefer had become. “They’d ask, ‘Are you Yennefer?’ and I’d say, ‘Who’s Yennefer?’” she laughed.
Meanwhile, The Witcher 4, codenamed Project Polaris, is officially in the works at CD Projekt Red. The game will take place “a few years” after the events of The Witcher 3, and though many plot and character details remain under wraps, narrative director Philipp Weber confirmed the team wants to honor previous games and player choices.
“We can’t say yet how we’re going to handle it,” Weber said, but promised that Polaris would respect “everything that came before”, including Sapkowski’s books and all three previous games. That means major player choices could carry forward, though it’s unclear if that includes returning characters like Yennefer.
As of now, Denise Gough has only voiced Yennefer in The Witcher 3. Whether she’ll return depends on how CD Projekt Red chooses to evolve the story and characters in this next-gen installment. Gough has also said she met the character more through fan reactions than during the work itself, showing just how unexpected and impactful her performance became.
