While very few ‘Wonderkids’ go on to become very successful DJs, this guy has become a very successful DJ at an age where most are still ‘Wonderkids’. To top it all, he was crowned number one DJ last month in the very popular DJ Mag poll. Chances are you’ve heard his breakthrough track at least a 100 times in clubs. Our Artist Of The Month for November is none other the “Animals” hit-maker and DJ Mag World Number 1 DJ – Martin Garrix.

Born Martijn Garritsen in 1996 in Amstelveen, Netherlands, Garrix learnt how to play the guitar at age 8, and decided to become a DJ after being inspired by Tiesto’s ’04 Olympics performance. Martin also gained formal education from a production school in Utrecht.

His early collaborations ‘BFAM’ with Julian Jordan, and ‘Just Some Loops’ with TV Noise helped him gain some popularity.

However, his breakthrough hit came in 2013, when ‘Animals’ soar through to become number one on Beatport, making him the youngest person to have a Beatport number one to his name. He also released ‘Wizard’ with Jay Hardway and a remix of Project T by Sander Van Doorn and Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, which also went on to become his second Beatport number one. That year he made his debut on the DJ Mag charts at Number 40, going on yo become number 4 the year after that, before making it to number 2 and then finally topping the poll in 2016.

“Helicopter”, his collaboration with Firebeatz, became his third number one track within a year, and sealed his ticket to the big league.

A debut at Ultra Music Festival in Miami followed, with ‘Proxy’, ‘Virus’ and mammoth collab with Afrojack, ‘Turn Up The Speakers’ coming soon after.

After making it to the Top 5 in the DJ Mag poll in 2014, he started experimenting with Progressive House. He released a free track ‘Forbidden Voices’ on reaching 10 million likes on Facebook, and soon later released a collaboration with Usher, titled ‘Don’t Look Down’ which he also premiered at Ultra Music Festival.

Another collaboration he worked on was ‘Rewind Repeat It’ with Ed Sheeran, also launched during his Ultra Miami set. He finally got the chance to work with his idol Tiesto and they released a track together last May, titled ‘The Only Way is Up’. Martin also worked with Avicii on ‘Waiting For Love’, which featured John Legend on vocals. Garrix has been credited as co-producer. He also released a free track called ‘Poison’, weeks after reaching Number 2 on the DJ Mag Poll.

Garrix announced his decision to split with Spinnin Records, and announced that he would start his own record label. STMPD Records was officially launched in early 2016.

He released the first track on his label with John Martin on vocals, called ‘Now That I’ve Found You’. In February, Garrix announced his debut studio album via Twitter, and played ten unreleased tracks during his hour long Ultra Miami set.

He has since released two more singles from the album, with the first being ‘Lions in The Wild’ with Third Party.

He recently released ‘In The Name of Love’, a collaboration with Bebe Rexha. He also made his first live performance on TV on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Garrix has also announced a worldwide partnership with Sony Music. On 19th October 2016, Garrix was announced the number one DJ of the DJ Mag Poll, in Amsterdam. Here’s wishing him all the very best for the future.
