The Met Gala has been around since 1948, as a way to celebrate and raise money for the ever-growing Costume Institute.
The first event was nothing more than a small dinner party with high-profile fashion moguls. Yet over time, The Met Gala morphed into the over-the-top star-studded festival we know it as today.
In fact, it wasn’t until the 1980s that this annual fashion gathering turned into the celebrity get-together we are currently most familiar with. It was within that decade that actors, sports stars, and singers began to attend alongside the usual fashion icons in attendance. Nowadays, you’ll see everyone from pop stars to Reality TV icons and even TikTok stars bumping elbows, and clamoring up those giant stairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Clad in their most campy attire, it’s not abnormal that we’ll see celebs sporting a bath towel and streaked makeup or head-to-toe kitten attire. (Hey, Doja Cat.)
The night is meant to be over the top and outlandish, but not everyone can get behind the star-studded spectacle. While the 2025 Met Gala is exploring a more empowering and thoughtful theme with Black Dandyism, some of the previous themes at the Met Gala event weren’t nearly as meaningful. Plus, even if the theme of the event is thoughtful, it doesn’t mean all the celebrity guests in attendance are.
Such was the case for “Cool For The Summer” singer, Demi Lovato, who had such a bad time at The Met Gala, that she felt no choice but to ditch the event for an AA Meeting.

Former Disney Channel star Demi Lovato is praised for so much more than their top charting songs. Lovato has also been applauded over the years for their outspokenness, as well as their brutal honesty when it comes to the often phony nature of the entertainment industry. (“La La Land”, anyone?)
But one of the “Give Your Heart a Break” singer’s most eye-opening observations yet, was when she exposed the “cliquey” and uncomfortable nature of the celebrities attending The Met Gala. In fact, as the pop star admits, they had one experience at The Met that was so bad, they refused to attend for eight years afterwards.
The Singer got real about the situation back in 2018, telling Billboard, “I had a terrible experience. This one celebrity was a complete b*tch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey… I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink,” Lovato revealed, amid their sobriety. “I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on – millions of dollars of diamonds on – in an AA meeting.”
The pop star continued, poignantly saying they related more to the people in their AA meeting than the celebs flaunting their outfits at The Met. “I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala – fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d***.”

Did the “Heart Attack” singer confess to having a terrible experience at The Met Gala? Yes. But this doesn’t mean they’re totally done with the experience all together. It seems as though all is forgiven, since Lovato turned heads with their striking looks while attending the 2024 Met Gala.
Whether or not Lovato will be attending the 2025 Met Gala is still to be announced. You can find out for yourself by tuning into the event Monday, May 5th at 6pm ET. The highly anticipated event will be available for streaming on Vogue’s Official YouTube channel.
